Well... answering the question in terms of preference and not merely combat ability..

*points at title*
Marauder for style, (of course!) because it has a brutally wicked style to it. Flinging dense metal blades at anything far away, and plasma-frying everything that dares come near it. It just has an aura of 'do not mess with me' to it.

Though for aesthetics, I'd have to say Slyandro Probe. It's probably the prettiest ship (well, technically not a ship but more an exploration satellite) I've ever seen.

Well, alright. Combat ability? Orz Nemesis, for the same listed reasons that all the other Nemesis fans in this post have stated.

Gee, it sounds like it's nearly as good as a Ploxis Plunderer in the hands any old fool.

Back to SC2...

I really like the Marauder. It seems to me to be the most balanced of the three 30-point ships. The ship is very versatile in tactics - an effective camper/ artillerist, it can also be devastating in close range with a double sideswpe of FRIED, or simply lay mines and force the opponent to run away until they hit them. If any one species wanted to go on a galactic rampage and wipe out all other civilizations, this is the one to try to do it. Oh wait! They do.

The Chenjesu is a very classy ship, and shares this range diversity, though the tactics are not quite as varied.

The Supox are deadly in the hands of a pilot who has wrapped eir mind around the controls. I'm getting there.

The Androsynth is very balanced and has few positive weaknesses. Also classy.

I love limpeting things. VUX may be weak against most ships, but I can't quite say no altogether.

I like the Zoq-Fot-Pik. It takes real guts to fly that ship.

Lastly, the Shofixti about equally good at everything, and can be counted on to finish off what others couldn't (Yehat, Utwig, Kohr-Ah, whatever).

1st- I like the Slylandro Probe best. I can take out almost anyone with it.

2nd-Orz, yea, i agree with everyone else. Definetly one of the best.

3rd-Sorry but I do like the Harika/Yorn ship, whatever it is called. I got pretty good.

4th-Arilou- awesome ship, no question

5th-androsynth- again, awesome ship.

The Nemesis! Not only does it do a fair bit of kicking ass (as previously stated hundreds of times), but it looks like a manta ray. The fishiness of the captain and ship give it personality.

precursor service vechile. hellbore first and second slots, 3 weapon guidance modules, 1 crew pod, 1 high cap fuel tank, fill the rest with shivas, one word: unstopable! but since you cant melee with it right now, id have to say the yehat terminator. it held its own quit well in sc1.~DEFIANT

Naturally, the Androsynth Guardian. It is the best ship, hands down. Bubbles, an excellent defensive weapon, stop Ur-Quan fighters and Orz Marines in their tracks, and do decent damage to boot. DOGIs are too stupid to go around and also die. Get a Chmmr to chase you, bubble the sats, and comet away. Comet form smashes pretty much anything. It's a little slow and regens energy slowly, but it kicks anyones pants. Only ship I've had problems with is the Transformer. It just runs away and picks you apart with rockets.   Sad

I have 2 main styles of playing
1. The run away and shoot. I use spathi or orz depending on the speed of the enamy ship.
2. Fly close kill, and run away. This is good with the ariloo and pkunk.

The supox and the yehat are also good, but hard to master

My favourite ship has to be the Pkunk Fury.  I don't think I would mind if the ship didn't have its ressurection ability, I'd still love to fly it because of its awesome speed and maoeuverability.  I love playing against a human opponent for the most part, because it really ticks them off when I fly in and out unscathed, then insult them as I speed to safety.

Other favourites include the Nemesis, Torch, and yes... even the lowly Earthling Cruiser.  So what if I've learned to master its destructive powers?  It was worth the effort.   Tongue

True, Omni, there's always the pride of just sitting back and thinking that if you were the last line of defense between Earth and a fleet of Dreadnoughts, you could safely say, "Bring it on" with the full confidence that you'd be remembered in the history books for a spectacular last stand.

I've been trying out some new tricks with the ZoqFotPik Stinger. With a little creativity, you can take out some rather nasty ships with it in no time, such as AI-controlled Yehat Terminators. Just fly straight at 'em, tongue 'em once, and, if possible, warp out. Quick, efficient, reasonably safe, marginal crew loss. The Stinger works nicely against most other ships that don't have incredibly powerful weapons (e.g. both Ur-Quan ships). Considering its low cost, the Stinger is one of the best ships available. It's totally awesome!

I must admit, the Stinger's got its perks.  Sure, it's got crappy crew, point value and a lousy "oomph factor" (my own unique way of rating ships) it's kinda fun to fly.  I always think about spitting in the opponent's face or something like that when I spray the ZFP's little dots of destruction.  That tongue makes the coolest sound of any secondary ability.  Yeah, the Stinger's got its moments.  I love flanking a drained Guardian and licking him to death.   Grin

I'm with Omni about the Crusiers, despite their weak engines and slow reload rates, they are good ships! Those missiles HURT! A good planet whip to get one's self moving, and the rotation on the Crusier is such that most shots like Nemesis and Mauler can be dodged simply by turning. Homing warheads can be destroyed (mostly) by the PD lasers, and if not (in the case of a still-powerful Mycon shot), sacrifice a warhead and blow it away, as the Crusier can't afford to lose many crew. Only thing is if you face a good Jugger pilot or even a crappy Avatar pilot. Then you're screwed.

I used to be awesome at piloting the Cruiser.  That was back in the day when Star Control 2 first came out.  I haven't returned to my old Earthling dominance.  I found the ship very useful against the Dreadnought, or at least a very timid Ur-Quan pilot.  It's weird, I remember using the Cruiser against most ships, with a good chance of winning in a lot of cases.  Maybe that was just an illusion... *shrugs*

Of course, its speed is its achilles heel, but a patient Cruiser pilot can use its powerful nukes to advantage.

For me, the start of a Cruiser/Dreadnought battle was always a "race to the gravity well"  If I couldn't get a speed boost before coming into the Dreadnought's weapons range, it was a terribly short fight.

But once I remember running to the gravity well, with a Dreadnought in hot pursuit, and its response to my gravity whip was to do one of its own, which put me very comfortably within weapons range.  The fight didn't last long after that.  Angry
