Computer games of today.
« on: January 27, 2004, 10:45:41 pm »

Basicly I think they suck.
there seems to be only 3 genres today. fps, rts, and rpg that look like rts.
the most recent rts that i like is Total Annihalation.
AVP2 is the fps, (okay thats fairly new)
rpg is sc2.
another type I like is fallout tactics.

the way that game companies make games, make them look like lost sheep. when it comes to rts, they all try to copy blizzard.
how many fps shooters are there?

and when it comes to original ideas like MOO and anything that does not fall in line with what the rest of the games are like, they decide to ruin them.

There are lots more genres than that.  It's just that most of them are on consoles...

Brawlers have been making a comeback (many of which rely on older properties, e.g. Castlevania, Rygar, Shinobi, LotR...)

Fighting games (a) don't really work on PCs, and (b) haven't really done anything particularly new in quite some time.  Integration with other genres here is meaningless.

The odd space shooter still gets released as well; Gradius V and R-Type Final are both in the printing stages as we speak.

The GBA has platformers coming out its ears, as well as a good chunk of turn-based strategy games (I really should fire up FFTA again one of these days).

I miss graphic adventures, but the least impressive part of those games (the generalized lock-and-key fetching) has been integrated into most of the brawlers and RPGs.

I know there are alot more genre out there then that but when i walk into mediaplay the 3 i listed are all i can find. I MIGHT find one genre you mentioned but they tend to be poorly made or just suck.

I agree, there are no good games at the quality of Sc2 out there anymore...
i play alot of UT, and little war3. that's about it
i dont like the rpg style in general(tried to play jedi kotr or whatever) and a few others... it just suck(by my opinion). all games now need to be in some 3d engine, but it's rare to see a game where you need to think instead of just killing the enemy.
i dont know what rps is, strategy games maybe?

anyway as i said games today must have some 3d engine to be attractive for players, but sometimes it ruins it...
unfortunately games like SC2 are not very profitable considering the time they need to be worked on... it's more difficult to do a game like SC2 style when it's on 3d.

besides you need the right mind for making such games. not just placing a team and tell them to make a game(or in this case a sequel. SC3)

Actually, that's kind of an interesting side point.

Star Control 2 itself, er, inherited a fair amount from preceding games (primarily Starflight 2, and Star Control, which was itself a mix of Archon and Spacewar)  -- and generally, successful games get driven into the ground with imitators and sequels.

Did SC2 really have any notable imitators?  The only games I can think of that ever get named in that context are the Escape Velocity games (which I haven't played)...

RTS == real time strategy

RPS == typographical error, as said a few posts back.

Escape Velocity is not particularly like Star Control. The ships all use the same weapons, you never really get to change anything (unless you take over the galaxy as your own personal slave empire), there is no time limit and the universe is passive.

It gets to be a very empty place after a little while. Judging from the promotional material, the more recent versions are better about this.
