Is there anywhere that I can download the original, DOS based version of the game from 1992? I have been searching everywhere but I can only find this new version.
Any suggestions as to where I can look?

Is it legal to post a link to a game that was sold?
(I know that UQM is almost the same game, but a lot of things have been changed, not to mention the name!)

Technically, no; the official answer is "use UQM instead". Even if you ignore the parts we don't have (mainly the trademark on Star Control), we weren't given rights to the PC source.

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

That is weird because I emailed Paul and Fred a long time ago (when this whole deal started) and they at least implied that they had recovered the lost PC source code and were planning on using it for UQM. -Jim

The code we received was partially ported (and basically OpenGL based); they had claimed to us that the PC source was lost.

OK.
I still have it installed on my old desktop so I guess I will just have to transfer it to my new computer.
Thanks for the replies

It's got complete conversations for one reason. It's also fun to see other differences between SC2 and UQM. At least, that's what I still fire up mine for. Maybe he wants to decompile it.

Nice one, Censored... I once lend my SC2 diskettes to a friend of mine and since it was a pirate-version, I didn't have the starmap so I drew a map of my own which I gave to my friend.
About 5 years later (one year ago from now) a guy said in irc he is having problems with SC2 copy protection (I didn't know about UQM at that time) so I just told him what star is in question whenever I was available.

You know, you can mess with some of the settings so the game acts more like the old PC version.
