What do you want for your birthday? And why?

I hate buying birthdaypresents. I usually luck out, but the process of figuring out what someone wants, and what would make a good present for a certain person is annoying to say the least. So I figured I could stock up on some good ideas here.

So tell me what you folks would view as the perfect birthday gift, and why. It can be the perfect brithday gift for you, or just an overall great gift.

WOW - OK - That is a slightly weird topic, - But hey that is what this off topic session is all about!

hhhmmm... Well - I always try to find out what their hobbies are and do some sort of gift certificate. That way they have a choice over what they are getting, but they also know that you thought of their interests - not just handing them cash.

(Lukipela, is it someones birthday over there and you are in a panic.?)   Wink

I never listen to the radio but i do like to listen to a select few songs from japanesse anime. so the CD idea is not universal.

I like to look through the bargian bin for computer games and find the good game that can out a few years ago. then i buy the one my friends might like.
AVP2 for around 10 dollars right now.

I like to buy DVDs for my family. blockbuster sells used for cheap.

Hmm, maybe  I should specify the point of this topic once morwe. I'm actually looking for original, interesting ideas fro presents. CD's and DVD's, while fair enough presents in themselves, are quite common. When I buy presents fro people, I like to buy/make things that will genuinely surprise them and delight them. They don't necessarily have to be fancy and expensive, just... imaginative.

For example, this christmas I froze water in a gingerbreadmanform for my flatmate. Why? Because his last name is Iceman in finnish. This is a bit more specific than I'm looking for, since you folks don't know anyone I intend to get gifts for, but along those lines. surprising, unexpected, that kind of thing.

Old games is actually not that bad an idea, I don't think I've evr done that... It'd be unexpected at the evry least. Byuing soemone "Lemmings" or "Cannon Fodder", or some such could actually work out well...

For me the PERFECT gift right now is a new computer. I am pretty much stuck right now with a piece of junk. But in general, it isn't the best gift.

So... I think the perfect gift is someone meaningful for your friend. I can't say what is it, because I don't know your friend.

Dee, thats the thing. I don't have any certain friend in mind right now, so general gifts will be fine (as long as they aren't too general), so I have something to look at and be inspired by when the enxt birthday/whatever comes round.

Some of the best reactions I've gotten was from treasure hunt type games.
Basically, you get the person something...a CD, a computer game, a box of chocolate, whatever. I know, not that imaginitive. But, then you leave them little clues, leading them on a hunt for the gift. Make sure not to make it too hard.

The thought and effort it takes really perks their interest. Just don't make the "hunt" too hard.

Uuh... umm...

Someone fix my comps cooler. It makes terrible noise. Oh wait, I think I can do it myself.

Umm, so ... uuh... a guess a girlfriend would be cool, but slavery isn't legal anymore, is it? Though I wouldn't like a whore. They suck (literally).

Uuh, oh, right. Then it'd be money. With money the person can get the matter he/she wishes to get.

Money == TV / computer / radio / stereos / car / apartement / clothing / etc.

You get my point. If someone whines "it doesn't have any feeling with it", it's his/her problem. I accept money *and* I appriciate it a lot more than some book.

I hate money as a present.
People end up getting money for the're b-days, and giving the same amount of money back for other peoples b-days.
