Has anyone here ever heard of this game? It was an 80s space game that was strikingly similar to SC2 in many ways - though I'm not sure how many other games of this type there've been.

There's this: http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=830. Personally I quite liked this game. It focuses more on planetside missions than space combat. I was particularly impressed by the wonderfully varied and imaginative arsenal of weapons and armor the game boasts. The weaponry is divided to particle accelerators, energy weapons and more conventional slug throwers. The armors had different resistances to different types of weapons. As I recall, the most powerful energy weapon was called Cygnus cannon, and it created miniature black holes inside the target.

i know and love plantes edge!!
thoug it is very diffucult to get it running smootly theese days. i never completed it though....
it also had a somewhat difficult plot to follow, and was an open world. meaning you could accidently fly into space that was ment for a later stage of the game, were the enemies had no problem ripping you apart.
PE is one of the games i really wish a remake/sequel of. even more then i want a sequel of SC!
