game-enviroment for sequel?
« on: February 12, 2004, 08:51:04 am »

hii
im a fan of SC for quiet some time, and recently got even SC3. i do not want another discussion about it, but i found it to be quiet ok.

i thought about the future of SC (if it has any....)

one of the main parts i like about SC is the exploring (NOT the mineral collection of SC2, which i found very boring, but the hunting for artifacts, and going after hints) and if one enviroment is made for that it would be "Noctis".

Noctis is a game. well kind of....
it has no ingame story, no ingame plot, no aims, goals or missions, no enemies or even NPC's.
you could say, that you are the only "character" in noctis.
(with one exeption)
in noctis there are two things.
a galaxy, and your ship.
you can fly to different stars and planets and land on them(on the planets and moons), look at them and name them.
... and thats all.
this sounds boring (it even sounds VERY boring) but is it not.
at least not for everybody.
although im not one of the hardcore noctis players, i like to explore a new star system every now and forever....
i mean every now and then.

so if you have some time just try it!
dont be repulsed on sight, the current noctis is not pretty compared to recent standrds, and is has some tiring menu system, but it has potential.
here you can get it:
ftp://http://www.anywherebb.com/postline/index.php?l=5Q5ewnNgjr7i6OFdMYGhpI7iHw4&r=lYUhcug3l3hh9gr6XQ3iK7D3q

it is IMO worth at least discussion
if you implement a better control, and decent graphics (which the ascendant will have, check the development screenshots) it could be a great platform for a SC.
just add a story, some interesting aliens, and a system to interact with them....

so if you want try it (but take some time for it. its not easy to get into the game) and write your opinion.

that game was........... intersting. the lack of ingame help made me stop playing. its impressive they could stick a 3d engine in 3 megs.

there is only a backgroundstory in the documentation.
and there are ruins on some planets.
other then that, you only explore.

It is still a pretty good game... Not as good as UQM - but I see why therlun brought it up.

but i did not simply brought it pu because i like it.
(to be honest i cant play it too long in a row, because the graphics give me creeps. graphics dont have to be high-end to please me, they they should be "nice" in some way....[SC2 graphics e.g. are not modern, but still nice])

i brought it up to hear your opinion.
do you think this could work as SC game-engine?

It could....

It would required a lot of work and I don't think that is what the creatros had in mind.... But I think it would work. (The low space it takes up is a added blessing to many a poor CPU.)  Smiley
