Melnorme
« on: February 25, 2004, 08:25:58 pm »

I think I've wiped out the Melnorme. I've gone around to each giant star system killing them off and they don't come when I call on the 'Caster anymore. It's a nice way to get some extra resources, but the lack of technology is a pain.

It makes me wonder....They say in the PC version that they
plan to leave the area by 2159 to avoid destruction. But they
don't take off when I start attacking them. Seems their warning device
doesn't work so well.

....Or they just don't want to encounter such low-life creature who wants to destroy them, when all they want is trading with you! Ah!  Wink

You aren't destroying their ships hard enough -- the metachron is nigh-indestructible.

Metachron??

(this is a bit off topic)
Something strange once happened to me when I was playing starcontrol 2. I was trying to talk to a melnorme ship when I bounced off the space in front on it. Then when I talked to it the comander said 'No, watch out, your going to crash' What was that all about?

Are you sure that wasn't the Keel-Verezy speech?

Crowley, eh? I totally read that book. The parts with the witch hunters and Anathema were dead boring, but it was alright on the whole. Unless you're not a reference to Good Omens at all...

Good Omens itself was referring to the famous Occultist Smiley

The MetaChron is a reference to a speech in the PC version that was not in the 3DO -- it's the first clue to the lose condition, and it appears in the intro the second time you trade with the Melnorme:

Quote
How nice to see you again, Captain.
Before we go on, I have a small announcement.
As you may know, in our travels throughout the galaxy
we Melnorme have found many strange and interesting alien artifacts.
One of these devices is the MetaChron, a kind of trans-time alarm system.
In a nutshell, it warns me of future dangers by predicting its own demise
which is most likely linked to my own well being, since I keep it under my pillow.
The unit is a small pyramid and, when all is well, white in color.
But if we are proceeding along a timeline which will eventually result in the destruction of the MetaChron
the unit slowly darkens. Presumably, it will be destroyed at the same time as it turns completely black.
When we first entered this region of space, the MetaChron was white.
Now it is light gray.
At its present rate of change, something will destroy the MetaChron
in the early part of the year 2159.
In order to avoid this unpleasantness, we may be leaving just before this time
so if you have business you wish to conduct with us
I suggest you do so before January 2159, or February at the latest.

(The PC script is available from the Pages of Now and Forever, incidentally, under "Star Control 2 -> Conversations".  It will eventually be an option in UQM, but if you can't wait...)
