I know you're not going to change OS's but just a clarification: linux can have an incredibily small installation size (I run a version of linux on my ipaq that only takes up about 18 MB, and that includes the extra programs I installed). More than likely you clicked "workstation instal" on one of the more popular linux CDs and got all the software that would effectively replace 15-18 microsoft CDs.
