I downloaded this earlier read through the manual and everything but i can't seem to get more then 5 mins into the game before i make contact with an alien probe and get totaly worked by it. Now i use my support ship first and shoot a couple homing missles or something at it and that gets worked because the alien probe is so damn fast. Then i get my big papa ship and use that becase it's all i have left and it doesn't turn well very well. I'd compare it to a 82 ford whatever and well it gets owned. So i have a couple questions that i'd appreciate answered.
Is there a way to slow down the fight or speed up my ships?
I've gotten some resources off a few planets. What do i do with them after?
I noticed some of my crew died while my lander got hurt by the elements on the planets i was getting resources on. How do i get more crew?
Sorry if there is a thread about this. I read the "Read here before posting" and it said that i should just ask and maybe someone would help answer. If there is anything else i should know or advice ya'll are willing to give i'd appreciate it. Thanks

It seems like my advice for the new player is in order...I suggest you restart your game.
Have you visited Earth? If not, that would help you along TREMENDOUSLY. Of course like the rest of the game will be, people may not be willing to help you unless you help them out first with something, in a sense give them a reason to help you out. Once you finish dealing with Earth, you will have the starbase captain (Hayes) as a resource. Ask questions to death of him, he will tell you a lot of background information to get you started in the game. You will also have the starbase as a resource too, where you can get supplied with everything you need.
The key is conversing with everything you meet and follow directions. Some species are nice and others are hostile - figure out what they are and what they want. Write down any kind of clues given, like planetary locations, how hostile the alien is you meet, homeworld locations, locations of interesting items, and so forth. Again, talking with Hayes will give you lots of interesting directions to go.
One thing you will find about your travels is that you will need resources. Getting those supplies I mentioned at the starbase aren't free. Hayes will tell you about that too (with disagreements on a few very minor details). Resources are gathered through mining as you've no doubt figured out - you will need to travel to other systems to make that happen after you mine out Sol. I suggest you write down what Hayes tells you and use that as a guide for where to go. Remember as well, as you've probably discovered, that the weather and tectonics values on the planets mean something. It is not wise to try missions on dangerous worlds or you will lose crew and perhaps landers. Remember as well it costs resources to mine, so you will want to look at doing things with profit in mind.
On using your resources, a good suggested initial priority would be to upgrade the thrusters on your main ship. They exist for both turning and speed. Other than that you will have various other options. Furthermore, you will find later on that you can buy additional technology from an undisclosed alien race you should discover soon enough. Then too, you make alliances with races and you will get access to more of the ships like you see in melee.
Hope this is enough to get you started without spoilers and without cheating. The main thing from your questions that I see is that you just need to visit Earth. Enjoy the experience, it's a very interesting and richly rewarding game to play.

Thanks a bunch Captain Smith. i'll definitely take your advice. I started to approach earth one of my tries and the Ur-Quan told me to stay away so i thought i'd get destroyed by them if i went any closer.
Any advice for space battles starting off? Should i just run away or is there some way i can slow it down and actually use normal human reflexes to try and kill them.

Here is the best advice for space battles early on....
Don't!
Instead, upgrade your thrusters so you can out manuver and outrun every other ship in the game (including probes). That is done in the menu were you upgrade your modules. It does cost a little, but you can sell your gun on your big ship if you need more RU since you won't fight for a while.
Slight Spoiler!
Mine EVERY single one planets in sol - who knows, you might get something.....

The probes are okay to deal with.
First, whenever you encounter ANYTHING in space, save your game. If you lose, you can reload and try again. Might be a bit of a pain at times but it can, and will, save you a LOT of time and effort.
Dealing with the probes themselves is a bit of luck and a lot of patience.
When melee starts, point your Earthling Cruiser towards the probe and lob off two missiles right off the bat. Once they are away, activate your secondary fire (control key by default). This will activate your cruisers Point Defense Lasers (not on flagship!). If your missiles hit home, then your PDL's should be able to handle the probe without too much trouble, though the cruiser will be in bad shape.
A tip for sol, Mine it out. Strip it dry, clean out everything and then some. Dont leave without at least two and preferably three cruisers attached to your fleet. Add Cargo bays to make interstellar trips more profitable and add a second fuel tank.
Once you feel your going fairly well, add a few thrusters and turning jets to your flagship. This will make it far less of an annoyance to fly around and will increase its combat effectiveness, though I wouldnt reccomend using the flagship too often early in the game.
Clear out the centauri star cluster (Except for Alpha Centauri, it's too dangerous because of the hotspots at this early period unless you are very good at avoiding them) except for Delta Centauri. Delta Centauri is in Ilwrath space, and they dont take too kindly to Hu-Mans. You can mine that star system, and it is rich, but make sure you run like hell unless you fancy taking on an Avenger or three.
Another bit of advice, if ever you find yourself in VUX space, employ the use of Earthling Cruisers to your advantage. Without Admiral ZEX, a commander and hero of the First Great War, in command of the VUX fleets, their intruder spacecraft are only so much space junk to an Earthling Cruiser provided you can keep out of the intruders laser range (which is mercifully short). I would, however, advise against using the cruiser in melee. The intruder starts with extremem proxmity then.
There is also a readme buried somewhere in the game directories, that will help you immensely if you decide to read it.
Hope this helped you out, and have fun playing the game
One last thing, make sure you dont take too long, there is a timelimit and your deadline is up at a certain point. Dont worry too much though, only start worrying if the year is around 2160.

Like the others said, don't do the space battles. That's one benefit of having all those thrusters I mentioned. Since the others threw out the spoilers now, I will say that you'll find out all about the Ilwrath as a result of that probe you met up with eventually. The Ur-Quan are the bad guys as you've figured out, but they're someplace else and won't bother you unless you find that someplace else.
As far as space battles do go, there will be a point when you have to fight them, but after that point you'll be more than powerful enough to handle them. As you found out, the probes will be a periodic issue, but you will be able to handle those too after you upgrade your ship and fleet given a couple of mining trips. as far as the probes go as well, there's a way to deal with all of them for good should you choose to do so
BTW, the game pesters you with probes if you go outside of Sol before you visit Earth anyway...kind of a heavy-handed way to force you to start the storyline.
Thanks a bunch Captain Smith. i'll definitely take your advice. I started to approach earth one of my tries and the Ur-Quan told me to stay away so i thought i'd get destroyed by them if i went any closer.

Some good pointers:
1. Try the Super melee until you're good enough with Spathi against Ilwrath and you're not losing crew in such battles
2. Go to Volantis star system after clearing the Sol
3. Clean the 'easy' (class 3 or lower tectonics or weather) planets - there is an emerald world, 2 radioactive and 2-3 treasure worlds at least)
4. Go to Alpha pavonis and take the Warp pod from planet 7
5. Go to beta Pegasi and discover the rainbow world there
6. Go to Gamma circini and wait there until the 17 -th date
7. Check the starmap. Close to you should be a star called 'Unknown'
8. Go through - go to the upper right star in Quasispace
9. Take the portal spawner
10. Try the portals until you find that to Utwig space - the upper right corner of the starmap
11. Rainbow worlds at Beta leporis, gamma aquarii, groombridge
12. Take a portal through the portal spawner to Alpha centauri
13. Buy all the new technology offered by melnorme
14. Mine all you want - collect bio and RU
15. Build up your flagship and fleet
16. If you have too much problems with the probes - simply engage them with your flagship and then hit escape!

My best advice on the probes is to pummel them from afar, never permitting them to get close to you. If you cannot manage that -- escape!
(Incidentally, this method works well on certain other aliens also, heh heh heh.)

Indeed, that's probably why the MmrnMhrm weren't put in the game as they used to be. The Transformer in Y form can easilly destroy nearly all average-speeded ships, such as the Dreadnought, and the Intruder, ofcourse..
My best tip of winning the game: note everything any alien says down. Ofcourse not EVERYTHING, but do write something down when a alien says something like: "When I was on a mission with some Yehat in Mycon space, I remember seeing a bright, rainbow coloured planet, disrupting my scanners.". Its clearly a small tip from that alien that you should check it out. Some aliens, however, don't give away these stuff, unless you say something specific to them.
Keep a little handdrawn map showing where specific places are, such as a alien homeworld and a item you've heard of from a weird alien. This way, you can combine certain items which lay close to eachother, making lesser fuel-costs!
And maybe the best tip: have fun, you're about to play one of the best games ever made. I think everyone here agrees to that one!

Howdy, I'm pretty much a total newb considering I haven't played this game since I was a child and I never got to get too far into it.
I actually have a couple of newb questions myself if you don't mind me leaching on to your thread for a moment
-Is there a time limit? I thought I remembered something about a max year that everything shuts down and you lose.
-In order to take out an enemy race which I really want dead (Let's say Ilwrath), do I locate their home planet and obliterate all life through an orbital nuclear bombardment (or kill everything in said planet's orbit), or does each race have some kind of a quest thing that's associated with them? (I took care of the Spathi with a quest thing).
-Is anything time dependent? I was contacting by the...Zok-Fot-....Zok-Fot....the green mushroom, the eye thing, and the air freshener. There homeworld is a wee bit out of my scope at the moment, will delaying cause them to get eaten?

No problems.
1) Yes. If you look in the FAQ thread, this is regarding the Metachron speech. Problems start happening sometime in 2159, but can be delayed to 2160 with actions of a certain race.
2) You can't take out any race by yourself. However you can affect things through action (or in some cases inaction) like you've noticed with the Spathi. Make friends, or hurt your enemies or friends...
3) No delaying on them initially won't hurt much, although like was said, they're weak and need you to protect them.
