Star Control is Eeeevil!
« on: March 26, 2004, 02:00:04 am »

Thanks to the spoiler thread I've recalled a little thing that's been bugging me for quite some time now... ages actually.

Some time ago there was a similiar spoiler thread. The poor guy who started it got flooded with different raports about the Cloking Device(tm) and other things that popped into our minds.
I told the story of the Thraddash Afterburner, only I wasn't joking...
... I mean... yes we all know that you can't get such a thing in the game, but the memory of this device is still stuck in my mind, I DO remember that I DID have it...

Another thing, which you might find kind of funny, is that I couldn't complete the game until I got the walkthrough, it took me 4 years more or less... it got to the point that the game started giving me nightmares, about entering a strange star system where I found a planet/ship that was supposed to lead me to all the answers. When I started talking to it's inhabitants/crew it turned out that it was something so Sinister (c) and so Eeeevil (tm) that a Spathi would suffer a heart attack... I was more lucky, I just woke up realy, realy scared...
What is even more strange, is that I keep having those nightmares every now and then, despite the fact that I completed the game and know that there is no Uullltimate Eeevil in it.

So, what's the point of this post?
Well I just wanted to know, if the game itself is some kind of Downright Sinister 'n' Evil Brainwashing Device, am I it's only victim or are there other loonies like me around here...

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to call it "brainwashing", but it sure makes you think about a lot.
The thing that was probably the most scary is the surface report of bukowski going insane. 'Them' are probably the most frightening to think about.

You don't need to be a good liar to make good lie in the internet - no one can see your face or hear your voice.
But I'm not lying, I do remember the afterburner, but whether I've realy seen it is a completely different story. I explained in the mentioned afterburner post that my imagination was way too much for me when I was younger.

But screw the afterburner, it was just an example of what SC2 can do to your mind and the post was supposed to be an encouragement to share similiar experiences.

A friend once told me that a long time ago he had played a copy of Star Control 2 that was somehow bugged so that he couldn't get the Pkunk/Yehat reinforcements to come to the Sa-Matra, despite having met all the requirements for that. Once he had stayed up until 4 A.M. trying to get it to work, he finally gave up and went to get some snack before going to sleep. When he opened the fridge, he thought "Now where's my Pkunk fleet..."

LOL!

well.. maybe he was just messing with the .shp files or something, messing the game up.. :p

I do remember though, that after a bit of playing Sc2 again from the start, when i had to walk my dog, Instead of saying my dogs name, i said Fwiffo.. Wink

And ofcourse, Sc2 gives some nice swearing words. Like Phlegm-Filled Dgrunti Belly Licker, Non-Functional Sex Organ, and some others which i forgot by now.. Wink

Does it qualify for this thread if I frequently ponder about UQM code under my shower ?

I spend far too much of my spare time on the fan boards of a 20+ years old game. Clearly it is evil for consuming my spare time.

I'm glad this isn't a high-traffic board or I'd never get any work done. Grin

It used to be though. Remember back when this was SC city?

Also, if you have time to do work you need a SC side project.

I'm quite sure my boss would disagree with your interpretation. Cheesy
