Anyone see this movie? It's kind of a mixed bag of good and bad. The dialogue has a few good lines ("War is old men talking and young men dying"), some awful ones ("Do you know what's on that beach? *dumb pause* Immortality! Take it, it's yours!!"), and far too many dull ones ("I want to be remembered, blah blah blah..."). Everyone speaks in an english accent, but I figure if Lord of the Rings can get away with that, anyone can.
The events near the very end are stupidly done so it all ends on a sour note. Agamemnon in particular bothered me. He was not supposed to be that evil and his death (which never happened in the actual Trojan war or the Iliad) was ridiculous. Also, Achilles's death is portrayed in the stupidest possible fashion. In fact, I would declare this movie a cat turd were it not for the quality carnage. The fights in the movie are what I came for and they did not disappoint.
So besides venting, I'm wondering what others thought of it.

I liked Odysseus, but perhaps its because he was also in LOTR. Also, wasn't Paris supposed to do in Achilles with a single rock to the heel, thrown off the walls of troy?
Nonetheless, this is not the movie of the Iliad. The lack of Thetis petitioning Vulcan for a new suit of armor was a major clue. As was the lack of Cassandra, and forget about the beauty competition between Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena.
I can see why movie logic dictated that Achilles would make it as far as the horse, but it would have also made sense to do as it went before: Achilles goes down, they become demoralized, Odysseus figures out a way to win anyway... it would have worked, so long as you had enough sympathy with the rest of the greek army.
At one point they slipped up and called Ares Mars (i.e. used Roman name instead of Greek). Maybe it would make sense, since the Trojans eventually became the Romans (according to Vergil).

I thought it was actually the god Apollo who shot Achilles in the heel with his plague arrow...
In the original Illiad ofcourse, not the movie.
But then again I could be wrong.

Oh yea, and Vulcan is the roman version, the greek is Hephaestos

It felt to me like they were trying to produce a story that, if it were twisted over the memory of centuries, would produce the Iliad. This is a different thing from taking a fantastical story and "playing it straight", which is what Peter Jackson did to LotR. As a result, large aspects of it seemed a bit forced.
I don't mind the British accents, especially since Greek-accented English is ofter rather difficult to decipher.
I second the "Sean Bean did a pretty good job with Odysseus" sentiment, and the writers got his general attitude down fairly well, I thought.
I could have lived without the Matrix-Cam (tm) on some of the swordplay, frankly, and I was tired of the "let's put choir music over the scenes of death and destruction" bit before LotR was finished.
It's also worth noting that just about every supernatural element was excised, so it can't really be said to be The Iliad as much as "a movie about the Trojan War." I'd have preferred the gods to play a more active role, but then my friends and I got into an argument over who should play Eris which was never really resolved. (insert your own joke here)
Yeah. I won't be watching it twice. But I didn't think my time was wasted, either.
