Ignoring Interbellum completely, which is as much as it deserves, I seem to remember some source saying that Ur-Quan naturally communicate at ultrasonic frequencies that humans can't hear. (So yes, really *really* squeaky high-pitched voices.)

Of course, they could still communicate to humans by making translating computers or machines, but they may consider that beneath their lofty stature; it probably pleases them a lot more to force the Dnyaari to do *all* the work of translating for them.
