What happens if I accidentally killed Tanaka before I knew I needed to revive his race. I was just mining there early in the game and he attacked me, and I blew him up. Is there any way to recover from this mistake? Also is it absolutely nessecary to bring his race back or can I do without it?

I don't think theres any spoilers here, but just incase I'll put a warning.
That was it. 
You can still beat the game without them, but if you really want the shofixiti, just go check the shofixiti home system about 6 months after you killed tanaka. And what ever you do, don't kill them.

Yes if you kill Tanaka, his brother Katana will appear later. However that is your last chance.
I think the story about the yehat / shofixti 'defeat' at the end of the war was maybe the best story of the game. Hearing about the shofixti sacrifce, with the yehat music. Wow.

The Shofixti never really looked much like rats to me, they're much closer to koalas. Their convo portrait was one of the few pieces of art from SC2 I wish had been done differently... something more like a rat-faced creature with vaguely far eastern splint armor maybe.
