The Ilwrath are killing Pkunk, but they will not kill the Pkunk entirely. You should really wait until you find a good time to get them to wage war. The Pkunk are indeed naieve. You know that the Yehat hate the Pkunk, and will gladly kill them. You need to talk the Pkunk out of killing themselves with their quest of friendship. If you don't save them, then they are really dead. Hayes will mention it as well. You can convince them to turn back a few times but after that they WILL go to the Yehat.
