Apparently, a company named "Stardock” put a poll a few months ago on their website for a game called Galactic Civilizations (http://www.galciv.com/index.asp?u=0), asking the visitors whether they would like the company to develop a sequel to either Master of Magic or Star Control. Does anyone know who these cruel "Stardock" people are and why they are forcing us to choose between our children? Before you get all excited, as I did, the poll has already been decided in favor of MoM (or so I understand). As far as I could gather from the forum the “Stardock” group, in spite of its heartless ways, is given much praise. So, what is this all about and is it worth risking disappointment?

It sounds like you two guys are talking about fire and ice. There's a big difference between what you two mention.
Modern computers have been moving away from the legacy generation of computers. Many functions that old programs rely upon are no longer compatible, and old games like Ur-Quan wouldn't work at all. Recreating a game for modern platforms means you make the game work with the new standards and code that a modern PC has. Because of this project, you can play Ur-Quan on your spanking new P4 4.0Ghz without a problem.
What you are speaking of, Chad, is to make an entirely new game, based exactly on Ur-Quan 2. That takes a huge amount of effort and resources, as well as a deep understanding of the game and what it's about. In an online community, you'll have to accept the time that people are willing to spend to help, and it's much slower than a dedicated team of programmers could be. Such a project would take years, I expect. If there are no legal troubles to do it, that is.

You can download Master of Magic at the Home of the Underdogs, then go to this link (http://hollowbomb.com/html/momxp/) in order to make Master of Magic work on XP. Also if you'll want audio you need to configure your sound card in DOSBox.

I'm on Windows 98 and it works fine except there's no sound. I have no idea how to configure sound on DOSbox (which I may or may not need) and it sure doesn't want to tell me.
