Star Control 1 on XP

The origional was the first computer game I ever played, and call me sad but I prefered it to UQM. Whilst UQM has a considerable more substantial plot, it lacks the strategy element of the origional.

I still have the disk - but I can't get it to run on XP. I'm in no way a computer bod, and have basically given up after it simply ran at a snails pace.

This may not be a SC1 forum, but I'm assuming [possibly wrongly] that someone here will have played the origional, and maybe knows how to get it running. Any help will be muchly appreciated.
