Just checking - I know that some people consider that cheating......(the lander I mean - not fwiffo)

O - and congrats for the enlightened Shiver.....

I carry two landers with me and only load if they both get destroyed and I am far away from home. That never happens, though. And I don't use Fwiffo in combat very often, since I mostly try to avoid unnecessary conflicts until my flagship is fully equipped. But indeed, I really dislike losing Fwiffo, if it comes to that. Even though it doesn't make any difference storywise. If I have a save close enough I tend to load if Fwiffo is dead. Mostly though I play untill the flagship is destroyed (which never happens) since I can always return to starbase and reassemble the fleet.

I'm not sure, though, have I ever been really defeated.

Reloading might be cheating, but we all probably do it from time to time. That's the beauty of a video game vs. real life. You can reload, avoid the mistake and keep on going.

Heh, not really. I won't be leading people into anything like that until they've got upgrades. Planet listings is someone else's problem.

I put some guns on the Tugboat pretty early on so it could shoot down Slylandro's, but I have a very strong dislike for using a godly setup to kill everything you meet later.

I tend to save/load a lot since UQM tends to crash a lot for me (for some reason). Or more accuratly it stops accepting input and just sits there and I have to hit f12 to close it.

In the early game I tend to cheat some to try and get a little bit ahead of the curve but later on (when I have more than one lander) I tend to keep the losses rather than loading.

As for my ship, until I have built up a mass of resources my main ship can hold it's own in battle but mostly has crew and resource pods. Once that is done I go for a godly setup (2 forward fusions, a defense laser, and enough shivan furnaces to keep me shooting most of the time, oh and 3 tracking modules.

I tend to do most of my fights with good old fwiffo, I got realy good with spathi so that I can fight just about any ship computer controled with a spathi.  I *might* do the save load thing if a planet has tectonics of 7, weather 4 or temp of 300ish (though generaly I can handle tectonics of 7 with minimal losses, especialy after the speed upgrade). the temperature thing is up in the air though, sometimes I can handle around 500 easy and other times I loose landers to 200.  Weather just sucks, I have lost landers to a weather of 3 (darned metalic landers...)

hmm, I should practice on super meele to get better with the aliance ships you can get early against hierarchy/nuetral attackers...

btw, I even did ok vs the sa-matra with good old fwiffo though he usualy ends up dead anyway...

I always play with the insane vindicator, as it IS the most customisable ship there is (I love trying out different combos..)

Encouraging the player to only use fwiffo is the wrong track, at least to me. Get the person to experiment with the Yehat, the Pkunk the Arilou and even the ZFP. That way they will at least enjoy some of the other diverse ships this game has to offer.

There will be variety, but I'll be damned if I'm going to tell newbies to use the Stinger. That rust bucket isn't worth the garbage cans and duct tape used to build it.

Yes, it is kind of sad that as soon as the ZFP give me their four finest captains and ships, I melt the ships down for scrap and reassign the captains to lander duty...
