Lander Lift-Off problems
« on: September 20, 2004, 09:18:28 am »

Hey, I love this-just installed it.  Thanks much, staff!

I can't get the lander craft to lift off a planet once I have landed on it.  I have hit every key on my keyboard, and no go.  On earth's moon (game beginning) when I found and loaded the moon base equipment, it returned to the ship on its own, but nothing after that.

Can anyone help?  Thanks.

Did you try the Esc key, like the manual says?

I think he would have....I bet if you rooted around in the files, you could find the key bindings.

I suggest re-binding your control keys.

If you have windows XP, go to: C:\documents and settings\your accounts name\application data (hidden folder)\UQM.

See, keys.cfg and open with notepad.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions.  Yes, I did hit the escape key many times.

OKAY, now if someone can patiently explain what is key binding and how I do it, I will do it soon as I get home!  Any info is appreciated.

"Key binding" is just a term to describe making the computer react to pressing a key.  The idea is that you "bind" certain actions to certain keys, such as up-arrow for "thrust", Enter for "fire", etc.  With UQM, the keys and the events they trigger are all defined in a text file named "keys.cfg", it lives in a hidden folder on your hard drive.

In your case, UQM doesn't seem to be recognizing when you hit your Esc key, which is no doubt inconvenient and somewhat unfortunate.  On the upside, you can tell UQM to use a different key than Esc quite easily:

Click Start -> Find -> Files and Folders, and search for the file named "keys.cfg".  Several may appear, you want the one under "Documents and Settings".  Open it in Notepad, and edit which keys do what.  I think the file format is straightforward enough, but I'm wrong a lot.  Smiley

Okay, thanks to everybody!  That did it, it's working now.
This is totally great.  The story line is really awsome, this is a great trip down memory lane.  Many thanks to all the guys who spent a ton of time on this.

One last question (I hope).  I have a 21" CRT monitor, and the game plays in a smaller window over the desktop.  Is that normal, or if I switched to a smaller monitor (say, 15") would the game fill the screen? Would changing my res to 800x600 help?

Yes, no, and no.  Smiley

If you would like to fidget with the game options without getting your hands too dirty, I suggest you download and install this:

http://www.spacesynth.net/markvera/uqm-loader/uqmloader-1.1.zip

This program will allow you to enable "full-screen mode" which sounds like what you want to do.

Whoever made that is a genius, and I love him/her =p

I have an idea, instead of having an inbuilt setup, why not just make it so that when you select "setup" the game minimizes, and that loads up?

Alternatively, have that as the DEFAULT .exe, which would be convenient =p

Well, IMHO, a inbuilt setup thing is a bit handier.. But adding thhe uqmloader to the official builds wouldn't do any harm.. Unless they aren't allowed to add the loader to the official builds....

Can't think of a legal reason why they couldn't...

Hey, Hey, Hey!  I downloaded the new loader screen available, and now am playing in glorious full-screen 21" glory. The graphics are great if you bump up the resolution to highest. Grin
