In the Finder, hit Command-Shift-G, and enter "~/.uqm" in the dialog box. In the window that appears, open the file "keys.cfg" in TextEdit, it has plenty of comments to help you along.
However, it bears mention that I have no joysticks to speak of, and I remember seeing a set of Harmon-Kardon Soundsticks (you know, the speakers) get detected by UQM as joysticks once, so the joystick support on OSX may be a little...buggy. Good luck with it, though.

Thank you. That was extremely helpful. I was digging around in the program package looking for the config file.
After playing with said file, I had difficulty launching the program until I realized it was because it was looking for joystick 0, but I had it plugged into port 1. This is frustrating because I may not always have my joystick on-hand when I'm wanting to play, and so I'll have to tweak the .cfg file each time. Oh, well... we do what we must, right?
Another frustration is that with the game pad (joystick, whatever), the game isn't registering diagonals. For example, when moving the cursor around on the space map, I can go, say, right, and the cursor will speed up, but as soon as I try to go up and right, the cursor stops and begins crawling straight up, eventually speeding up going upward. Any suggestions with that?
Thanks again. I'm really enjoying playing this old favorite game.

It will be better in time.
