From what I've heard about the project, Steve Martin will not try to copy Peter Seller's brilliant original Closeau, but try to reinvent or reimagine the character from his own point of view. I admit, that doesn't sound too promising, but if anyone should do it, I'd rather it was Steve Martin than, say, Jim Carrey.

I don't really see how making anything new from the same source will automatically cheapen the original work. If you are right, though, I think this film did more to "cheapen" Seller's than anything Steve Martin will ever do. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108187/
(This paragraph contains spoilers) I assume the "final" film you're referring to, is "Curse of the Pink Panther" (1983). When the film opens, Closeau has already mysteriously disappeared; indeed Sellers had died during the production of the previous film (Trail of the Pink Panther, 1982). However, due to the miracles of modern plastic surgery, it turns out,Closeau has altered his looks: he now looks exactly like Roger Moore. No, I'm not kidding. Roger Moore plays Closeau in this film. I don't know about you, but I consider that a bit more offensive; the film was released a short time after the previous one, obviously to cash in on the Pink Panther name. To me, that cheapens Seller's memory a lot more than someone picking up the concept twenty years later.

in "man on the moon", jim plays andy kaufman so well its freakin scary... its like he was posessed or something. in batman, he was the joker, no boubt about it, but the inspector? im not too sure about that. but to the topic, i dont think steve martin has it in him to play the inspector either. i just dont see it. then again, i was never big on the pink panther movies growing up. though i did find the cartoons harlarious. i really cant think of a substitute. ill have to think about this for a while.

Although I'll probably have to go with either the first Pink Panther film or Dr. Strangelove, close behind for me are The Party, 1968, and Lolita, 1962 (a 'serious' role he pulls off very well).
