The Vux, the Shofixti, and the Beautiful Creature

(mild spoiler warnings)

I am currently doing my best to play SCII without the benefit of FAQs or guides of any kind.  I did watch my bro play as a kid, so I remember certain things.  (Such as the location of the Syreen homeworld)  However, I will not act on my memories unless I discover them in-game.  (The Arilou revealed this homeworld to me)

However, in the case of  Admiral Zex, he hints his creature is found in a star system relating to this text "Basked in a yellow light, Linch nas ploh, the long thin creature who has swallowed the huge beast."

I tried visiting star systems with serpentine names, which didn't work, and eventually went with the rational that it a star cluster shaped as a snake with some yellow stars.  However, these criteria seems to fit hundreds, and I relented and looked up the location.

I'm just inquiring if there is any other hint to the location I missed?  I can go track it down now if I knew. ^_^;

P.S  while writing this, I noticed "linch nas" sounds SORT of like lyncas.  Is this the hint I was missing?

After you make allies with the Thraddash, talk to them.

The clue is easier to grasp if you look at the original map that came in the retail box of SC2: http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/sc2/images/sc2_color_map.jpg.

It really does look like a cartoon snake that swallowed an elephant.

Ah, thank you for the map.  I actually owned the old SCII...but that was a long time ago.  It does make more sense now.

That said, another related question.

Is there any information in the game that you MUST procure from the Melnorme?  Or can everything be learned through interactions with other alien races?

No, everything you need to know can be learned through interactions with the aliens (or Hayes) rather easily.  There's a couple of things that are rough to figure out if you don't connect the dots too well (Zex's creature not being one of them), but if you can't connect the dots the Melnorme can tell them to you.

Maybe the best thing if you want to play through just using the alien races is to wait until you get stuck and then talk with the Melnorme and pay for facts.  The advantage of the Melnorme is that their clarity far and exceeds the other clues many times.   But it's always a feather in the cap to figure out the game without the Melnorme's hints.

Not that it matters, but you can get a very strong hint as to the location of the Syreen from Fwiffo. He says they're bottled up in the 'Bugsquirt' system or something like that.

So you didn't need to wait for the Arilou.

Out of curiousity, which race gives you the info on what actually happened to syra?   I always end up buying the info from the melnorme so the conversation option to tell Talana about the egg sacs appears.

The Mycon - but you have to ask the right thing at the right place. (at their homeworld I believe...)

The Mycon aren't into deception at all, so if you come up with the right question given what you know in the game, you can ask it to them and they'll be very truthful with you.  Of course, you got to find the right group of Mycon and after you ask them the question they might want to be unfriendly and eliminate the clog in Juffo-Wup (namely you).  But that's how you find this out in the game without talking with the Melnorme.

A nice little point in humour, if you threaten Fwiffo in a certain way he'll give you a set of dummy coordinates that lead right to the beast. Kind of funny Smiley

The neat thing is, he gives you the real co-ordinates first and then the fake ones if you lean on him, which is the direct opposite to what most people (at least humans) do in this sort of situation. Cunning little fella, isn't he?
