Well - There are two main ways of dealing with those probes.
(Mini-spoilers)
1. Go meet a certain someone at pluto. Once you have his ship - you can defeat the probes without any losses as long as you play it right.
That is the only way to do it without extensive traveling.
2. The other way is to visit a few races in the upper-right hand corner of the map - they have a few hints for you.
Also - if you ask the probes the right question - I believe they tell you as well.

NO don't stop the probes!
Once you have upgraded the vindicator with enough stuff, you can fight the probes without losses, in two seconds and get 500 RU!!!
This is your only source of infinite resources through most of the game, don't lose it.

Yeah - Alpha Centuri and lots of patience. If you manage to stripmine that place your set for a bit. (lots of reloading... :-/ )
Also - try the druuge fuel trick which can be done by obtaining a device that they will refuel your ship for. Then load up your ship with lots of fuel tanks, fill 'er up and sell the fuel at starbase. If done properly - you don't need anymore RU in the game really unless you want to make a mosnter out of the vindicator.

Also, the Slylandro homeworld isn't in Ilwrath space. Another race will give you a good hint about where the probes are coming from.

There are much better candidate systems for mining jackpots...
Without giving away too much...start nosing around above where you find the Ilwraths or where you find the Arilou. Be sure you have a good number of storage bays.

Alpha Centauri is available very early, though, unlike the other options like the Ilwrath home cluster, the Arilou playground, and the Druuge Fuel Trick.
Alpha is not the only star with good worlds in the area.
Radioactive worlds are your friends. Auric worlds are your friends. If you are limited on space, ignore anything less valuable than rare earths. Get to know the value of the resources.
