Just thought this would be an interesting topic for the Starbase Cafe.
Right now my pick is Aliens. I might go for a star wars film, but I can't judge until I've seen the last episode.

Hmm. Tough decision. At the moment I'm gonna have to say Bladerunner.

Yeah, I read it some years back. So long ago in fact I don't remember it very well.

I'm waiting for a Forbidden Planet remake.
2001 was a little hard to follow. Actually. . .I'm not sure if it can be followed. Does anyone know why the last scene is of an embryo floating in space?

I think 2001 as a movie on its own is kinda a mess really. It has alot of atmosphere but that is basically it. The book I think is quite excellent though.

Its kinda half religious half scifi, but I have to pick the matrix. Not for the action at all. For the amazing symbolism throughout the entire thing. The entire trilogy is completely tight and brilliant imo.
I actually hate star wars. I think the whole thing is just a stupid exploitation of sci fi with no plot or acting. Its generic sci fi that has a high budget so every sci fi fan is obligated to love it .

Wow, really? I thought the last two matrix movies hurled chunks. And how could you not like Star Wars. It has more symbolism than the matrix, by ten fold. Especially the end of episode 6. Like the part where luke is standing half in the light and half in the shadows, as the dark side is beginning to take hold. Or the part where he slices vaders mechanical arm off, and sees his own dark gloved mechanical arm on himself (similar to want happened in the previous episode).

Star Wars (well the classic trilogy anyways) is packed full of mythological and historic archtypes--it is hard not to appreciate it on that level. It really is more than just a popcorn space adventure. And 'poorly acted' doesn't really do it justice either; I think ANH suffers in this area a little but they got good performances out of those people in the following two movies.
Regarding the Matrix; I totally agree about the first movie, though I find the stylistic elements so grating that I have difficulty appreciating it. I can respect it though. I do find it strange that you'd attack SW for poor acting without taking a close look at your own favorite trilogy...those were some extremely wooden performances. The acting styles and delivery of the Matrix movies reminds me alot of the SW prequels actually

Alien This movie has a lot in common with Metroid 1, which is one of my favourite games. Panties in the end makes it a winnar! Aliens is pretty good too.
MoonTrap Old B-movie, but I think it had... potential. It's about 14000 year old cyborg robots on the moon. Requires quite a lot of suspension of disbelief to watch. If someone were to make a new high budget version of it I'd explode of pure joy. I liked Virus too, well, the designs. Crab robot was awesome. Speaking of cyborgs, I'm trying to think of a good movie with the Borg, but there haven't been that many. Maybe the Scorpion episodes on ST:Voyager?
Metropolis (1929, silent) First sci-fi movie, and quite enjoyable.
