Mac OS X 10.4 Problem
« on: May 23, 2005, 12:35:53 am »

When I try to run the latest version, it opens a window with wavy images that cannot be made out.  What do I do?  I would take a screenshot if I knew how.

I can't reproduce this at all.  A screenshot might be useful, to take one, hit Shift-Command-3, the computer should make a "camera-click" sound, and save a PNG file to your Desktop.  From there, you can use Flickr or some other image hosting service to show it off, and link to it here.

As an alternate means of figuring out WTF is going on, try downloading the version of UQM provided here:

http://www.submedia.net/uqm/

...and see if turning on OpenGL mode helps any.

Huh.  It would seem that some Macs have a problem with "pure SDL" mode, then.  Since that's the default, and the only way to change it in the official 0.4.0 is through the in-game menus, and you can't see the in-game menus when it's all b0rked, this could pose a problem.

What are your system specs?  What resolution + colours are you running at?

I have a g4 iMac, with 1.25 ghz processor and 768 ram.  I run a resolution of 1440x900 with millions of colors.

Huh?  Why can't they just pass the -o option in?

Because there exists no mechanism to pass command line options to programs via the Finder.

That fixed it for me too. iBook G3/800, OS 10.4.1.
OpenAL audio makes SC2 quit unexpectedly at startup.
I am getting some stuttering audio, but haven't had a chance to play with settings to try and fix that.

I'm having the same wavy lines problem on my G4 12" 867MHz Powerbook. How do I turn on openGL? Hell, I don't even know how to launch the app in terminal.

A bit of help for unknowing, please?

I believe that Nic's version of UQM contains a preference menu like a standard mac application, in which you can choose between pure sdl (the nasty one) and OpenGl mode. However, the standard distribution does not.

That's just super.

Now do you think you could be bothered to read this whole thread and follow the instructions contained therein?

My apologies, but you asked for screenshots in your earlier post, and I assumed that, seeing as these were never posted, by doing so I could illustrate the issues I was having more clearly.

Even though your earlier post directed to the unnoficial build, which fixes the problem, the insturction manual that comes with the official build implies that openGL can be toggled via Terminal, which is obviously no longer the case. I was labouring under the assumption that there might in fact have been a way to do this, without having to download files, and that my screen issues may in fact have been different from the ones mentioned above, as I wouldn't call it wavy lines, so much as interlaced.

And finally, these screenshots would also serve to allow later viewers, suffering the same issues, to compare with what is occuring on their computers, and from that realise the correct path of action.

I meant no offence.

It's possible, but it's a little tricky, and it's just easier to have people use the "other" build.

If you really have a burning need to use the "official" build, open a Terminal, and change to the Resources directory in the app, and run the program from there, e.g.:

Code:
$ cd /Applications/The Ur-Quan Masters.app/Contents/Resources
$ ../MacOS/The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters -o
The Ur-Quan Masters v0.4.0 (compiled May 21 2005 15:37:05)
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY;
for details see the included 'COPYING' file.

Initializing base SDL functionality.

...and away we go!  But clicking on a chekbox in a Cocoa menu is much easier.  Wink

Those who do use the unofficial build, do know what you're signing up for. Nic's version contains more changes than just the pre-setup menu. You may want to look at the list of added patches here.
We have not included these patches into the official build for various reasons. For some it's because they doesn't fit our straight port philosophy (eg. rings around Saturn, exploding tractors on the moon), for others it's because we don't agree with the implementation (eg. Shofixti vs Pkunk music, pre-setup menu), and on others we just haven't decided yet.
It's very likely that you do not care about this (or you agree with all of Nic's changes), and the pre-setup menu certainly has its advantages. I just thought some of you would like to have the complete info.
What should definitely not be a reason not to use Nic's version is that it would somehow be less trustworthy; the official MacOS X build was also made by Nic, so I'm pretty sure the number of trojans is approximately the same Tongue.
