Strange absence of Slylando Probes
« on: May 24, 2005, 04:37:26 pm »

Has anyone else experienced a distinct lack of Slylandro probes?

Ordinarily, I'd come across one the first time I travelled through h-space - sometimes it would take until the second trip.  However, I'm now in June 2155, game-time, and I've still seen nothing of them.  Seems a bit weird to me.

I've finally encountered a Prove - July 2155.  I also noticed that when travelling through Spathi space, no h-space contacts appeared.  Eventually, when I strayed into Ur-Quan territory (en route to Alpha Tucanae), many contacts appeared, presumably Ur-Quan.  After these appeared, Slylandro and Spathi also appeared (where appropriate, of course).

Might just be a coincidence, but it definitely seemed odd - I was beginning to worry that hyperspace encounters had disappeared entirely!

I know that the probability of a probe spawning is very high (possibly even 100%) if you leave sol without first completing your business there. Could this be why you were used to such a high population of probes in HS on your first trip out?

After that (I think once you've allied with the starbase), the probability of a probe spawning drops dramatically, and slowly increases with the passage of time, until you negotiate with the slylandro.

Nope.  Smiley

I've played through this game more times than I can count; this seemed unusually low.

Unless other people experience something similar, I'd chalk it up as a coincidence.

...

Something just occurred to me - sometimes, does the game not start out with you in hyperspace, just before you drop into Sol?  I don't remember that happening this time - it was not unusual for a probe to spawn during that period IIRC.  I need to get the old PC version working again to check that!  Curse my feeble memory... see, for all I know, I could be thinking of something else entirely...

Shaun: no..
The PC version starts just like in UQM: with you in the outskirts of Sol...

Oh, and maybe you expected more Probes because Probes keep multiplying: so during the course of the game, there are more of them..

How long has it been since you played UQM/SC2 last time? That might clarify your thinkings...

I just downloaded 4.0 and I'm having exactly the same problem as Shaun. First time I left Sol, there was at least one probe that came after me, yet there was none. By now I've traveled over almost the entirety of the starmap and still not encountering any probes.

On top of this, the fighter AI isn't responding at all. My opponent just sits there and waits for me to destroy it.

Are these bugs that comes with 4.0? If so, I'm really lamenting my deletion of 3.0--Even after knowing that the cut-scenes are absent within it.

This is very, very odd behaviour, but it may be (distantly) related to some other bug reports about Quasispace portals failing to appear. It is probable that at least one undiagnosed bug in the event handling code exists; tracking it down is a pain when it never shows up on developers' machines!

Is this in Melee, full game combat or both? If it's in both, something is really badly wrong. If it just happens in full game, you may have a corrupt save. Have you tried restarting the game?

I have not tried restarting the game, but I'll give it a shot.

Sorry for the tardiness of my reply.

I've tried restarting it and that hasn't done anything for me.
