VERY annoying - where to put package files in 0.4?
« on: May 25, 2005, 07:41:24 am »

Hello,

So I get the uqm source for 0.4 - ok.

Untar it - ok.

Read the INSTALL file - tells me to look in doc/users/unixinstall - ok

Then, I look at doc/users/unixinstall - note that nothing has been updated from 0.3.  Hmm, methinks, but ok.

Download uqm-0.4.0-content.uqm - ok

Place in content/packages directory.... huh?  They're not there.  No problem, methinks, mkdir -p content/packages here we go, cp ../uqm-0.4.0-content.uqm content/packages - and presumably ok

Then compile - ok

Then, './uqm', and I get:
The Ur-Quan Masters v0.4.0 (compiled May 25 2005 01:53:22)
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY;
for details see the included 'COPYING' file.

Initializing base SDL functionality.
Using SDL version 1.2.8 (compiled with 1.2.8)
Fatal error: Could not find content.

Nice descriptive log error I must say, very nicely leaving out which file it was expecting so that I could deal with it.

Even when I installed it in /opt/games/uqm (yes, I did set that prefix at build time), the content file ending up in /opt/games/uqm/share/uqm/content/packages/uqm-0.4.0-content.uqm and running the game as /opt/games/bin/uqm, same problem occurs.

Sorry for my tone of voice, but I'm just a bit miffed that I couldn't play this excellent game before I had to go to sleep - I hate going to sleep in a grumpy mood, and its all your fault!

Anyway, how can I sort this?

Thanks (for making me grumpy),

There's actually a little problem with the source zip: the 'version' file doesn't get created in the content dir. (One other forum user reported this here).
And this version file is exactly what the program looks for to determine what the content dir is. It doesn't even look at what's inside this file.
So if you just create a file named 'version' in content/, then the game should start.
I'll take some measures to avoid people from bumping into this problem in the future... tomorrow.

The uqm-0.4.0-source.tar.gz file is fixed now.
