As the Arilou warn against allying with the Orz I wondered if it is at all possible to solve the game by following their advice.
It is possible to obtaint the Taalo shied to vanquish the Talking Pet without allying with the Orz?
As far as I remember the Taalo Planet was well guarded by the Orz but I don´t remember if it was guarded like a homeworld by an endless number of ships - which would mean it´s impossible to get the Taalo Shield.
There are no real in-game consequences of allying with the orz (and you are able to get their excellent ships) so I would advise that you do ally.
I'm not sure if you can get the taalo shield as a neutral party, but if you want to go all the way to the other end of the spectrum, it is possible to do the following (spoiler):
wait until the orz are cleansed by the kohr-ah, and then proceed to the taalo world.

As was written there are no in-game consequences regarding allying with the Orz, but yes it is possible to get to the Taalo playground without allying with them.
Destroy 14 of their ships.

The problem with not getting the talking pet is that even if you did fight all the way through the outer ring, the samatra has infinite guards like a home planet (afaik).
Is it possible to destroy the sa-matra without using the talking pet to scare the Ur-quan, merely by killing their ships guarding the sa-matra?
You can pass the ring by destroying one group of dozen Koar-Ah or Kzer-Za ships, but the Sa-Matra itself is protected by infinite number of ships. So the answer is no.
