Oh come now... the Kzer-Za!
Their rationale is impeccable. "I will kill you or enslave you in order to protect you, which ultimately protects me. You cannot possibly understand this, and if you resist, you will die for the greater good."
It's just like politics!

If I can't pick the Androsynth, then my vote goes to the Syreen. When the military dress code for the women is a revealing bikini, then you know they must live in a free society.

"He must have meant free as in beer."
The syreen hold an eternal kegger? No wonder they attract so many of us human males.

Spathi, Spathi, Spathi.
I burst out laughing and kept laughing all through Fwiffo's little introduction. By far one of the most memorable characters in any game I've played, and the Spathi manage to take what could be an incredibly annoying basic concept ("They're all cowards") and make it realistic, relatively well-rounded and even lovable. They're cowards, but a kind of canny, self-aware, greedy, manipulative coward. And they pull it off with such panache you have to love 'em.
I believe it when they say that Paul Reiche has the soul of a Spathi. It's the dialogue in the game that was written most from the heart.

Agreed, that was some of the best material in the whole game. Their super articulate speech and constant immitations of other species' somehow just goes really well with their hyperactive cravenness.
The Umgah are their only real competitors. They will nearly destroy entire worlds just for a laugh.
"We wanting to pull a real good one on those stupid nosers from Draconis for long time but since they battle thralls too, we not allowed do even small pranks on them like, say... dropping planetoid in their ocean. Big waves! Big waves! Har! Har! Har!"
And you can't beat loyalty:
"Here we come to say hello to new friends! Har! Har! Har!"
(Then they attack you.)

Hmmm, if you found the Melnorme homeworld, would they kill you or pay you like 50,000,000 credits so you wouldn't tell anyone else about it. After all the refuse to tell you their history, biology, and where they live. After all a race that secret might kill you if you find there homeworld.

If it wasn't Spathi for me (for practically the same reasons as Art, really), it would have been the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za (and otherwise Ur-Quan Kohr-ah, but I like Kzer-Za better) for their history.. Especially when you ask them "the words"... Something that -even today- gives me the creeps... The "good" kind of creeps, that is...
The Slylandro are also great stuff... But they have way too little dialogue, and aren't really funny enough (apart from one or two lines)...
