The Arilou act like you? You smile gnomically at people and give them cryptic hints, while refusing to reveal your hidden agenda? All the while secretly manipulating them behind their backs for your benefit?

You must live an interesting life.

I sometimes like to think of myself as a Melnorme -- smug, superior know-it-all who's good at heart but with an amoral, mercenary streak a mile wide. Reluctant to do anything without reward, especially give away personal information.

Spathi! I'm a total pascifist. That said, I also am really good at not telling people at school or the doctors about me, so maybe I also have a little bit of a Melnorme/Arilou in me.

Are you sure those are not reversed a little? How do you know the Arilou are bad at heart, and the melnorme are just little angels? My personal obervation was that they both had evil designs (along with the orz).

"Manipulating them behind their backs for your benefit" doesn't necessarily mean being evil -- the Arilou's benefit may be and probably is the benefit of the whole galaxy and for a greater cause and whatnot. And "amoral, mercenary streak a mile wide" doesn't connote being a perfect little angel to me.

They're both selfish at heart, or at least have a cavalier attitude toward lesser races like humanity and are willing to use them as pawns in their "potentially ominous long-range plans". The Melnorme just seem more upfront about it than the Arilou -- rather than secretly stealing away human beings and trying to cover it up, then giving smug, evasive sort-of justifications after they get found out, they just pointedly tell you their overall motives are none of your business and make it very clear that every deal they make for you is to their benefit. "In our culture 'giving' without a fair exchange of goods or services is vulgar and inappropriate." Great line.
