« on: July 31, 2005, 07:17:14 am »

Is there a way to completely change the language in windows xp?

my friend gave me a copy of windows xp professional and i have come to find out it is in a different language.

it is already installed and i have come to the conclusion that you cant unless you have the english windows XP pro.

i'll post "My Computer" as it is in this language to see if anyone can identfy it

Congratulations, you've got a Hungarian version of Win XP. Smiley Took me 2 seconds to find out. Ever hear about Google?

As to your problem, I have no idea.

AFAIK, the only way to change the language to English is to install an English version of XP.

Microsoft has the technology to add support for other languages to XP (Language Interface Packs and Multilanguage User Interface), but they only use this to add partial support for previously unsupported languages (e.g. Icelandic) to another base version (usually the English version!) and to use the English version as a base for a multilingual version. LIPs and MUI are hard to get hold of, too (you can't find them in shops or anything; you apparently need a corporate contract or something).

I suspect that Microsoft is making it hard to change the language of localised versions of Windows in order to prevent people from buying cheap copies of Windows abroad.

If you do, when your friend askes "What's with the funny
characters?" Tell him it's Microsoftian. Now that they own
the market, they make people use their own language. Buying
the English translation is extra....
