Nope, you can enjoy the view, but your lander is not equiped with Melnorme Catalog item 34792: The Gasgiant sail, the ultimate tool to sail through the atmosphere of any gas giant in pure comfort, now only at the price of 10.650.789 credits

That something actually happens when you enter orbit around it. (something different than the orbit screen showing up) It has quite a big impact on the game, so I won't spoil it for you. Ok, I'll add that it isn't close to the starbase, so be prepared to take some fuel along.
