I have never tried it, for two reasons: zou can get Fwiffo, but no thrusters (and you remain this slow until the Chmmr send you to the Starbase), plus the first time you need fuel, the Melnorme take everything you have, except the very basic amount of thrusters and turn-jets. So, tough luck, because you can get very fast stuck in a Sphere of Influence without any real chance of you to evade the next battle and the overnext and the one after...
I wouldn't recomend playing like this, but you can ever want to try.
You can make it to Delta Centauri or one of the other nearby stars with life and get bio credits. Then you don't need to sell your last two thrusters. It's still a pain in the neck.
Actually, the game used to crash when that happened. But it's been fixed since. If you haven't allied with the StarBase, the Chmmr will send you to Earth instead.
