SC2 Speedrun
« on: November 02, 2005, 05:03:40 am »

I'm interested in doing a so-called 'speedrun' through SC2, and since I've been reading this forum for years and I've seen some people here are real SC2 geniuses, I wondered if anyone could give me some pointers on how to best accomplish this.

The goal of this speedrun is to finish the game in as little REAL time as possible, which means the actual in game time is pretty much irrelevant (I don't care if I finish it in 2155 or 2160, for example).

What would the best path to take, the best planets to visit, and so forth? I have a speedrun guide here which is focused on getting the shortest virtual time and while some things are certaintly usable, others are mainly focused on getting the best in game time which I'm not interested in.

I hope you guys can help me out!

Here's the link to the speedrun guide I mentioned: http://fyad.org/x/http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/star_control_ii_speed.txt

I haven't read that speedguide yet, but here's my tip:
1) kill off the Cruiser and the Ion Bolt gun. Replace them with as many thrusters and turning jets as you can
2) get Fwiffo
3) get enough fuel to go to Delta Tauri and back to Earth, and mine Delta Tauri out completely.
4) Use the now amassed RU to get a lot of fuel. Head "north"
From there on, it should be quite easy.. Smiley

And it's nice to see more people from The Netherlands around here.. We're kind of surrounded by Finlandarians.. Tongue

Actually, game time tends to correlate pretty well to real time.  The only real time when game time stops is conversations and battles.

So basically game time and real time are the same thing.  Just don't rely on battles to get the RU you need because while you won't use game time, you'll take up real time.

Other non-spoiler tips, since I've been there, done that, and got the T-shirt (0ct 05, 2155 when I arrived at the Sa-Matra with toady and Chmmr-enhanced bomb before I gave up trying to make it shorter):

1) Learn how to get by with the least resources you can.  Use more resources, you take more time in getting those resources.
2) Mine instead of fight.  Neither matters to the game time, but you're wanting real time, so fighting won't go.  Speaking of mining, look for planets where you can scoop up the most RU in the shortest amount of time.  In fact, in my speed run, I got by with mining just one system outside of the Sol system.
3) Get as much mobility as quickly as you can.  This means thrusters.  And you might want to plan on getting the Spawner as quickly as possible too.
4) Figure out the quests that are necessary and unnecessary to do.
5) Figure out the times of your flight plans.  Is it economical to use the spawner or go direct?  Do you make any unnecessary trips that don't accomplish anything?  How much do you sit waiting for things to happen?

Of course, there's always spoiler-hints, where I tell you what I did, but I get the feeling you want the challenge of figuring it out.  So I'll just leave you with that.

In my opinion a speedrun is a crime against the autors. However it might be interesting after accomplishing the game "normal" way (doing everything  you can) in a game like sc2 the possibilities are almost limitless.

It may be faster to instead of mining visit a few rainbow worlds and buy fuel at the Melnorme to sell at the Starbase.

Can't remember my fastest, but I never tried it as a speed-run, although several times I've beaten the game in one session, so I guess I did it within something like 2 to 2,5 hours.

A speedrun? I've never been to fond of such things myself, really. (I love to take my time)
One hour and a half sounds pretty darn impressive to me. Congratulations, the Kohr-Ah probably never knew what hit them. Cheesy

Here's a .torrent for your viewing pleasure Cheesy

http://striker.ddcrew.com/sc2_full_hi.torrent

This was my first run through the game in a couple of years so I forgot a bunch of things and slipped up quite a few times, I think if I run through it again I can shave off another 20 minutes at least!

You know, my tolerance for watching other people play video games kind of maxes out on the speed-run of SMB3 level (~20 minutes). No offense, intended, but I think I'll pass.

How fast did you do in the battles? I'm curious, it seems like a place where there will almost always be room for improvement.

Had five battles basically

5 mycon for sun device
10 umgah for talking bet
5 druuge for bomb
3 kzer-za/3kohr-ah for samatra
samatra

they all only took a few minutes but still plenty of space for improvement, but for the first three fights i don't really get to pick the ships (can't mine all the resources/ally all the races, time issues)

edit: yeah 640x480, 30 fps, 800 kbps XviD, 64 kbit mp3
