Has anyone made their own custom builds of this game?
I downloaded the source last night and got it all ready to compile. I thought it would be fun to make a few changes just for the heck of it.
I started simple, I made the human ships resurrect just like the Pkunk do, and I made the human ship shoot 3 nukes at a time instead of one - one out the front, and one out each side, and all 3 track as usual.
Anyways I had some other changes in mind to the gameplay just for fun, like the ability to purchase alien weapon technology and install it on your Human fighter ships, ability to occasionally gain a technology secret by destroying a Melnorme trader instead of always having to buy from him, etc.
Any other customized versions out there or am I just crazy? I have beat the game a few times already so I think it would be fun to change things up a little...
P.S. - I use the nickname Hellbore on many different forums I visit, usually paintball related forums, and people often ask me where the name is from. Well I got it from Star Control 2 and the Hellbore Cannon

I have been thinking about it and most of the ideas I came up with for modifications don't really enhance the gameplay.
I did some funny things though to the ships... Some funny results in melee...
For example, I made it so that the Syreen can take ALL of your crew...hahah.... leaving your ship a floating derelict...
Also made it so the Orz can send off ALL their crew as marines... leaving a floating derelict again... hehe...

Aren't the proper probes supposed to shoot missiles, though?

First off, I know nothing about coding. (I get dizzy whenever one of those peoples at school sudenly start talking in a coding langauge. You know, with much define varables and such. )
But, you could try to first find where the data of the Mmhrmr (or something, they've got a really hard name.) and the data of the probe. Then copy and paste the probe somewhere else. Give it a new name, such as Melnorme remote control probe. (You control the thing from the VIndicator, so no problems with bad programming that causes the thing to zap ships apart in search of raw materials.) Replace the weapon data of the probe with the missiles of the Y-form. I think those would be just the weapons it needs. Long range, light damage. They would act more as a deterrent while the probe makes its escape, cause it was meant to explore if my memory is correct, not fight. (That doesn't stop it from being a killing machine. )
And yes, the probe was meant to use missiles for defence. The zapping thing was meant to zap asteroids for raw material used for the construction of more probes. But due to bad programming, they never got the chance to switch targets and would zap a ship in search of raw materials instead.

,,That was the worst and most boring movie I’ve ever seen. Lousy special effects.” Sergeant ironhead. The real reason why the alien brain on Cydonia was destroyed while in the middle of displaying a message telling the X-com operatives not to fire.

I think Shiver hinted at the idea that if you can buy the Probe then it should be able to shoot defensive missiles, and that would mean some extra coding. There was a thread a while ago about the Probe missiles.
