The makers of this game are sick.
« on: December 30, 2005, 07:38:21 am »

When I discovered this gem, I was instantly addicted, I played day and night for countless hours, just exploring space, hunting enemies, ect. Then abruptly... it ends. The damn black grubby things come and kill everything and you lose.

Why does a game that allows opened eneded gameplay with numerous time consuming sidequests have a time limit THAT THEY DON'T EVEN TELL YOU ABOUT!?

When I think of all the open ended games I've played, none of them have a time limit... this seems to defeat the purpous of the game. You are supposed to be immersed in the universe, and move at your own pace, not be rushed through the plot like some arcade game.

I am appauled, this game was so close to being great.

*spoilers alert*

First time I played the game through, I got owned by the black ships as well... and I loved it... Smiley I was like this game rules Smiley I started over from the begining, and I learned more quickly that the green guys and the black guys are fighting over that battle platform, and when the winner is determined that ur-quan will exicute there path of now and forever... for the black guys... that path is to kill every race that isn't ur-quan.... sooo.... black ur-quan = bad Smiley I started sending in other races to attack the black ships... The Thradash, and Utwig and The Suppox will all declare war on the black ships and take some serious loss to their fleets in the process Smiley But their fights will slow that armada from attacking and killing everything.

The game gives you more then enough time to spend a year to collect minerals and get your battle ship to full power, and at that point you want to get indepth with the plot and stop the ur-quan before they kill us all Smiley

If you want my tip... one of the first things you should go is get the portal spawner and get get it fixed by the airaluu (excuse my bad spelling) so you can warp over great distances very quickly... this will save your butt big time Smiley

Actually the original PC game did tell you, it's just that they were taken out from the 3DO port, which is what UQM is.

They still tell you.
There is a group of kind races which is very concerned about the doctrinal wars (as they will be most likely the first to feel the outcome of the war).
They are experienced scouts and will gather information for you. Actually, during time they will gather a lot of information for you. Most of it needs a lot of interpreting, but at least they tell you how much longer the war will last, which is the time limit.
And even in the original DOS SC2 game, cmdr. Hayes did not tell you about the time limit (it would not fit the story if he knew about it). Only certain races know about it (famous MetaChron user Blueish from the Melnorme and the before-mentioned group of kind races).
And no. Although the MetaChron can forespell the future to a certain degree, the MetaChron cannot help you make big bucks with placing bets on FUNGY! - the sport of kings (R) championship games.

Enjoy!

someone should really get a vocoder (voice synthesizer), imitate each races' voices and record the missing parts.

any takers?  Grin

I would probably do that if:

-I could find the software
-my stepdad didn't rip the mini-jack off of the MICROPHONE cord of my cheap BF2 headset(and no, he still hasn't upheld his offer to get a replacement jack. I might as well grab an Xbox 360 controller and the corresponding headset.)

Don't know how good my voice acting would've been, though, but at least it would be better than not knowing the essential stuff(What's a MetaChron? Where the hell is Syra? Note: I know where Syra is now.)because even the text wasn't given in the 3DO version.

Anyway, I just want to run around and freak people out with some weird Spathi voice from nowhere...

i could try but i won't be very good at it, and besides i think i will only tolerate doing voice overs only for the kohr-ah. Grin

I wouldn't mind someone redoing the blue ZoqFotPik. Their voice... bugs me. I think a lot of the VAing is perfect, though. Especially the Spathi,

The clipped sound of the umgah is weird. How was that achieved? I mean, not all of this sounds heabily vocoded.

By  the by, Kohr-Ah Death -- what does the ship spin patch do, exactly?

I'm sure the Precursors team, Masters of Sound, could create that effect easily, and explain it to you Wink

It's a good thing this game is Open Source, so it's easily improved by anyone who cares to do so.

The 3DO version of SC2 has a short presentation video of each ship that consists of a prerendered spinning ship with a voiceover. UQM doesn't currently support these videos, but I wrote a patch that adds support for them a few months ago (see bug 733). The videos show up in the Melee and Shipyard ship selection screens if you press the Menu-Special key (which isn't used in UQM) with a ship selected.

You'll need the 3DO SC2 CDs to get the videos, as we don't have distribution rights for the 3DO videos.

Heck even the Pkunk will tell you of the Black Crusade if you bring them tea and crumpets at the right time..

(Roughly translated I think if you visit them on the 1st or 2nd of February the following year they tell you that they had a dream and that the BLACK ships were defeating the GREEN ships. Figure out what this means Wink)

This is why we SERIOUSLY need to add the metachron conversation piece back in (in the PC version, the Melnorme strongly hinted at the time limit, but this was removed from the 3DO version that this is a port of). Newbies need to know about it.

Honestly, I really think that people knowing about the Mycon and the time limit is more important than a bit of the dialogue being unvoiced.

I remember the first time I played this game (when I was 14 ... 13  years ago). The first time through, the black ur-quan conquered the galaxy and eliminated everyone. I was devestated. Seriously, I was depressed. I couldn't believe I had failed. I was so wrapped up in the game, it felt real. I remember going outside and just kind of wandering around for a couple hours. I had realized the ur-quan were doing it, but I couldn't figure out how to stop them.

Eventually, I recovered, and since I had saved many, many times, I restored an old game and replayed, this time being more careful about the eventual end of the universe.

What a great game. I haven't ever been as emotionally attached to a game when I played through it.
