I reccommend Space Empires 4... Though supposedly 5 is on its way in the next few months.
There was also an ancient DOS game, years and years back. Warlords 2, it was called. Good game on its own, but once you added on the expansion pack, it was awesome. Good luck finding it now, though.

Man i wish they came out with a 3rd that woulda been so cool. With same interface but more technologies bigger maps and longer period of time. But not somethin where u go through period by period every few turns. It be cool to have several periods all in one game but still the pace goes at same rate. I love Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong games with huge maps with many countries to deal with. I dont get why so many game makers think people just want to play quick games. I mean thiers a reason for the save feature.

This isn't a multi-period civ type game but you might want to try this:

I've played the original extensively, and this one just a little bit. HoI is a diplomatic/economic/military game set in WW2 where the time ticks by hour by hour (but you can pause the game at any time). You can play basically any country in the world at the time.
