This is only partially true. The UQM savegames are compatible across the board from 0.1 up through now, but only within the same platform. That is, you can transfer savagames Linux <-> Windows, but not PC <-> Mac. So yes, other-endian systems cannot use your savegames.

Actually, 3DO SC2 stands a pretty good chance of understanding UQM saves. AFAIK, none of us ever touched the savegame format so it should still be the same it was on 3DO. And since 3DO was a 32-bit platform, the types are probably the same too. However, since 3DO is BE, you will need Mac savegames if you want to attempt using them on 3DO.
