To be sure, the "official" SC3 never happened. But don't throw the baby out with the bath water, I say. I rather think that the "Eternal Ones" are a good and interesting idea.
For sure, making Orz the enemy is another possibility
People seem to be opposed to answering questions raised in SC2. I disagree. The key is that in answering a question (What happened to the Taalo? The Androsynth? What are the orz REALLY? What the hell are the Arilou talking about anyway? What are the rules of Frungy? etc etc etc) a whole new set of questions should be opened up, to keep the player hooked
Lastly, as I see it there are two options for the style of a fan-made SC3. Either very much like SC2, or completely new and radical. SC3 tried to do something in between and failed miserably. The SC2 interface as it is is quite good, and with improved graphics quality, could make for an excellent new game. On the other hand, if it is to be abandoned, this opens up incredible new possiblities. Wouldn't you all just LOVE to play a Battlecruiser 3000AD-style game that takes place in the Star Control universe? I know I would. I'd be willing to pay quite a bit of money for it even.
So what do you all think?
Much as I'd like to contribute to development of new Star Control games, unfortunately I don't think I would be of much use. I know two programming languages - Fortran and Perl. Fortran isn't the terrifying line-statement language some would remember it as, and hasn't been since 1990. And incidentally, GOTO hasn't been really necessary since 77. Today's Fortran is a powerful object-oriented language. But, the only open source compilers for modern Fortran aren't near complete oand the commercial ones necessary to develop a game so complex with it cost in the thousands! As for Perl, while I consider myself fairly confident I'm just not good enough to develop something so complex with it.
So what do you all think?

Battlecruiser 3000AD LOL DEREK SMART (Just kidding dude, please don't do a search on your own name and attack me from out of nowhere)
Actually, that game might be pretty fun by now seeing as how its probably been patched up the wazoo.

Yeah, when I bought BC3000AD I was completely unaware of the controversy. It just looked like a cool bargain-bin game. I got the final version. 2.9 I believe it was. I actually found it quite fun and was surprised at all the controversy over it. Then I tried playing an older version and discovered the issue. It was released incomplete! Did a little more research, and I learned about Derek Smart's mail-order PhD.
You can download the entire thing for free now that battlecruiser millenium is out.
I was just thinking that a game in that style, complete with a dynamic Star Control universe, would be quite fun and interesting.cl

A 'true' sequel to SC2! I support it wholeheartedly! All that's needed is a devoted and talented developing team who will have to work for years (literally) for no pay or compensation whatsoever. Apart from that, I love the idea.
I'd love to be a part of such a developing team, but somehow I sense that an intermediate-level (barely) html programmer just isn't what's needed.

Apart from that, I love the idea. that's not entirely correct. the developing team would gain experience, maybe some satisfaction and praise (for example, if they say they'd publish a cool new re.. ehhh, update, of the game each week ). also, I believe it might be a good item on the portfolio of a game programmer.
but you're right - it's still too much work.. I believe the only praticale solution is dividing the project in an object-oriented style with a large group of programmers, each doing a small, pre-planned piece. the only problem would be synchronization and, neat and efficient code.

Considering Mount & Blade (http://www.taleworlds.com) is being created by a team of two, never concede that a Star Control 3 made by fans is impossible.
However, a vast 3D space-opera Battlecruiser style would certainly be daunting. And of course choices would have to be made that could still be as alienating to some fans as some of those in Star Control 3. For example, you could pull out the Druuge as the villain, but they just don't really seem suited for it (they're more neutral while being proactively evil, if that means anything). You could use the Orz as the ultimate evil, but doing it as suddenly and depressingly as SC3 did would be a big mistake.
It's always fun to throw around random sequel ideas, anyhow, to see if you can string them into a coherent plot. Like:
the Thraddash come back from supposed extinction a few millenia later with their brand new Culture and a fleet the size of the Ur-Quan Hierarchy
Because their photosynthesis has been rushed, the Chmmr are slowly degrading
The sole remaining Slylandro probe left in galaxy has become sentient and knows some information vital to the player; however, it has gone into hiding
etc etc
