Outer-most planet in the solar system, right?

Flying around in solar systems is just a teensy bit confusing. Basically, you have the solar system view, that shows the sun and the planets. When you approach a planet, the game switches to the planet system view that shows the planet and its moons (and anything else that may be in orbit). Just to make things a bit more complicated, the solar system view zooms in on the sun as you get closer to it.
So, to approach a planet from the solar system view, you have to first enter the planet system by approaching the planet, then approach the planet again to go to the planet. At this point, you should enter orbit around the planet and be able to scan it and land on it (if it has a surface you can land on; gas giants such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune can't be landed on). To leave a planet system or solar system or force the solar system view to zoom out, head toward the edge of the visible system.
The status bar at the top of the screen shows the solar system and planet system (where applicable) that you are in.

The purple one just above your ship. Some planets can be really small. When in doubt, look at the orbit lines on the map, and see if you can't find the planet somewhere along them.

As TiLT mentioned, the trick is to look at the great big dotted ellipses representing the orbits of the planets. Each of these ellipses has exactly one planet (or, in planetary systems, one moon or starbase). The orbit ellipses are oddly dim on your screenshot, but that may be due to JPEG compression.

I think all your probelms begin (well, maybe not begin) with your monitor being too dark. If you too think that brightness is needed you should tweak a bit with the gamma setting. Right-click the shortcut icon you have to UQM, and in the "target" field add this after the " sign at the end:
--gamma 1.6
or just replace the value with whatever you want. stars, orbit circles and many other things are hard to see when it's so dark. personally I use 2.1 ..

We did. You did. Yes we can. No.

I agree that the larger colored stars in the background are a strong anti-feature. No star in the real is large enough to cover more than 1 pixel (excepting of course the local star; in this case, Sol), and to add these fat stars here really muddies the planet identification issues.

This is an issue with the graphic design as is common with 320x2X0 mode. But trust me, as the game progresses you get much better as spotting the planets against the backdrop.

What can we do for you...today?

It perhaps could be more visible, yes...but as others have noted, it's the ONLY colored spot on that orbit line. Once you know how the orbits work, it's really not hard to find.
