Hi everyone, new to the boards here:

I've been a SCII fan as long as I can remember, ever since I got it for 3DO way back when. I was just now reading these boards, and saw stuff about mods. I have also recently been playing the game through, on my PC this time, probably for the 5th or 6th time. Its still fun, but I wish I didn't know where everything was by heart. That gave me an idea.

Would it be possibe to make a mod where everything was moved around? Change the planets and star systems everything important was in? Perhaps even rearranging spheres of influence? I guess the really hard part about this would be changing the hints you got throughout the game. Well anyway, just an idea, sorry if its been brought up before.

the simple part would be re-arranging the homesystems and special worlds (i.e. rainbow worlds, ur-quan wreck) cause the coordinates are all written out already in plandata.c.

i really haven't figured out the S.O.I.'s yet, someone told me awhile back how to do the S.O.I.'s but i've forgotten.

here's a question...

If there were a mod, would you want EVERY star re-arranged or just major stars?

Just to clarify, you are you talking about just moving stuff to different systems, not just moving stars cooridinates?

I would only want to put everything important on entirely different stars. ie Sylandro are at Beta Sagitarri or something, Zex's Monster in a different recognizable constellation (like Horologi could be "It basks in yellow light in the 'Bloody Eye') . Possibly have rainbow worlds pointing another direction. Maaybe even swap around  certain spheres of influence and homeworld locations.

I literally don't know anything about the capabilities of modding to this game. Would it be hard to add just text in the dialouge for clues towards the new locations?

I know it would still be easy for people who know the game by heart, because you would still know what you're looking for, but it would make it harder. The first time I ever beat this game I was like 8 or 9 and I'm pretty sure I used a lot of guides. I wish there was some way to play through it totally from scratch.

I suppose it would be relatively straightforward to just scramble the entire map, create new systems and constellations, and set new homeworlds and other important locations.  The tricky part would be editing the story to reflect these changes while remaining coherent - there's *a lot* of dialogue, and a lot of plot points, relating directly to the starmap.

This goes from trivial stuff (ZEX's riddle; historical anecdotes like the Hierarchy forces "pushing beyond the Raynet stars"; etc.) to moderately tricky stuff (Rainbow World pattern; Slylandro Probe coordinate system) to major components in the game's story (galactic spin direction; Ur-Quan arriving from one edge of the map and Kohr-Ah from the other, and the various plot points that relate to these events, i.e. Thraddash/Druuge backgrounds; etc).

the bigger problem is about the races whose S.O.I's move according to certain events

it is possible to switch the contents around without moving the stars.

i am willing to make the necessary modifications, if enough people want it to happen, but i would have to ask other people to help too, especially for certain conversations (text only)

first i'll do a test and switch sol around and start a new game and hopefully i don't start off in the usual place in the southwest area of the map. Tongue

hey dev team,
which file declares that you must start your game at the coordinates '1752, 1450'? (at the sol system)

it's been racking my brain that i keep starting there even though i move the actual star and the contents of the star.

You really need some program to search through the source files.
If you search for one of these numbers, you'll find 3 occurences:
- in sc2code/plandata.c. This is the star location of Sol.
- in sc2code/races.h. This is the location used when code references specifically to Sol, as for instance the start location, and where to you're moved after the Precursor bomb is installed.
- in sc2code/ships/human/human.c. This is the center of the SoI for humans. I think it's only used to the determine the location the Kohr-Ah go to to cleanse humanity.

A simple string search is often enough. Doesn't Windows have a built-in search feature somewhere in the Start menu? Last time I checked, it can search for strings in files.

Personally, I prefer grep, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be included in MinGW.

an actual program to search through files would be nice, i just wish it would be included with Visual Studio as a "search entire project" option, that would actually help alot.

Thanks for the info, never woulda thought about 'races.h', it doesnt seem the likely place.
I thought it might've been in starcon.c or restart.c

.:: EDIT ::.
Unfortunately i just found out visual studio does have something like this... figures  Roll Eyes
