Will the real SC3 please stand up!
« on: January 24, 2003, 10:52:14 am »

Okay, so here we are, trying to rebuild one of the best games on the planet.  Nevermind PC/3DO blah blah blah.  I think it's time we all started thinking about what the next installment of this wonderfull universe should contain.  I played and beat SC3 long ago and I can tell you I was just as dissapointed with it in most of it's respects as most all of you were.

It is my simple belief that we should ignore the fact that SC3 even existed and work toward bringing about a truly worthy successor to something that has brought us all together here for discussion and debate.  (all of which, might I add, is totally AWESOME in my opinion.)  I know we've all discussed this topic about a million times, but I don't think we've ever reached any kind of concrete result on the matter.

My point is:

1) We all LOVE this game.
2) We all seem to have an opinion.. (well doesn't everyone?)
3) WE can do something about it!
4) In a cooperative invironment, there's nothing stopping us, aside from TFB being too busy to go "HEY! That's not cool.. Change that sh*t!!"

We will of course need TFB's help on this.  Also remember.  We have a TON of talented people on this forum (eg: music, graphics, coding, etc..) that would be willing to work for peanuts or even NOTHING just to see this game come to fruition and see their name in the credits.

This could be a HUGE boone for TFB if we just lend a hand and care less if we "get paid" or not.  After all, isn't this story worth putting in the effort?

I for one, as I'm sure the rest of you have about 50 million ideas as to what this game could be.  If we help out TFB in this fashion, they get more cash.. Which means they can put out more kick-ass games.  Which also means, we ALL benefit.

So... Whaddya say?

So are you suggesting a completely fan based Star Control 3?

Or a fan based Star Control 3 with the story created by TFB?

You can't make a game by commitee (you'll never please everyone, and you'll end up arguing and thus- get nothing done).  So either way, some folks would have to take it, and run with it.  Not giving away any secrets until its done.

I think TFB helped TimeWarp flush out some ideas for its plot, including ones they were thinking of.  Though it looks like we'll never see anything come from that...

Nah, I was talking something written by TFB and we help with the grunt work.. That kinda thing.  I know I would sign an NDA if need be.

I agree with the Timewarp thing too.  I havent seen much in the way of progress on that.

In any case, I'll flesh out my idea further.  Everyone knows making a game requires a huge amount of time.  Not so much for graphical or audio content.. More for troubleshooting and reworking tidbits of gameplay.  A huge amount of time is probably something that TFB doesn't have to work on a project that may or may not sell  enough to be worth it to them at this point.

What I'm saying is we have anough people to easily contribute both content and coding routines, and then when the game is finished, TFB can do the bulk of it's sales via internet download - and then run a limited series of boxed sets for those that just HAVE to have a manual and a neato-nifty-keen map to hang on their wall.  If sales go well... Make another run of the game.  Maybe if it wells well enough, everyone who worked on the game could make a nifty profit.  But it shouldn't be expected.  I figure SC already has a large fanbase.  If the game is anywhere near as good as the last, and has silly things like internet multi-player/co-op/melee/etc.. It might attract new people into the frey and it could be pretty popular!

I realise this may be one big pipe dream... But, in the same right, it's not like it isn't do-able with the amount of talent we have just in these forums that's just sitting there doing nothing.  I ahve a ton of 3D models sitting on my HD.. Might as well put them to some use!

I'm not privy to the inner workings of Timewarp's Team Beige (plot team), but I hear they dropped the "design storyline by commitee" method and have assigned that role to someone (although I doubt it's TFB, they're busy with something else).  It's much easier to flesh out a believable and enjoyable story when there are a small number of people writing it.

Story by committee never works.  Do any of you guys remember trying to write an essay in a group in high school?  It was impossible to do it all together--the only way it would work would be to send one guy home to write it, bring it back the next day and have everybody look at it and make suggestions and changes.  If we're going to write a story, the actual writing has to come down to one guy.  Then we can play with it all we want once it's done, but one guy has to do the writing to start with.

Odd, I thought I had clarified earlier that TFB would do the writing (or pick someone) and then we could go from there.  If someone gives me a rough design for a ship I can usually have it whipped out in a matter of a few hours.  I'm just saying I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be willing to work on the project just to have their name in the credits.  That way TFB can pick up some cash and be able to crank out more really cool games.

..and that's my 2 cents.  ...again.

That's assuming TFB has the time for even that.  Writing a plot like that is a long, time-consuming process--especially one that's as open-ended as the one in SC2.

It is in times like these that I have trouble understanding the inner works of a game designer's mind.

Why the H*ll doesn't TFB make a game that would surely be a HUGE success ? The true "Star Control 3" ?

I alone have convinced 10 of my friends to play "The Ur-Quan Masters"... and for Gods sake... it is a 10 Year old game !!!!

Imagine the people I could convice to play a brand new Star Control game...

Well I think you guys get the idea...

It is proven that "pass the word" is one of the best marketing technics there are, and I think Star Control "3" would have no problem with that. There are few games that make it to the very top, and even amongst those how many 10year old games still have an active comunity besides Monkey Island, LBA and Star Control ? (I'm sure that there must be a few but...)

A fan based project would be good. I surely wouldn't mind playing another Star Control game with the UQM's engine, with a new plot, and multiplayer option,  but I would prefer to see a new Star Control.

TFB can do it. They have what it takes. Why are they not doing it ?

They don't own the "Star Control" name first of all.  Infogrames does.  That's probably the biggest thing standing in their way; though they could still make a new game if they wanted, it wouldn't be able to have that name, and would lose some points in the market for it.

Why would they?  If they have no plans to do anything more with the, erm, "franchise", then buying the rights to a name that they never intend to do anything with is, quite frankly, pissing away money.

I for one would much prefer to see them devote their resources to their current projects (whatever they might be) rather than have them flog a dead horse in the Berman/Braga/Lucas tradition.
