I'm pretty sure you recharge energy without dynamos, since I've fought off lots of ships with just a tail ion gun, fuel tanks, crew pod and engines, trying to build up cash for improvements.

That is correct - there is some energy regeneration built into the precursor vessel.
Dynamos make the energy regeneration more frequent. The number of dynamos vs. regeneration timeout is as follows:

0 : 10
1 : 8
2 : 6
3+ : 4

Each time you regenerate, the amount of energy you get is equal to the number of shiva furnaces + 1.

Furnaces going down, dynamos going across

\0123+
01/101/81/61/4
12/102/82/62/4
23/103/83/63/4
34/104/84/64/4
45/105/85/65/4

(There is no point at which additional furnaces have no effect.)
Note the bold entries. They all reduce to the same value (1/2) and have the same total number of module slots (furnaces + dynamos). Below this, you should use all furnaces. At or above this, use 3 dynamos and the rest should be furnaces.

Dynamos cost only half the RU that Shiva Furnaces do, so I think to be perfectly honest, it'd be for the best just to go for the triple dynamos when you're at exactly 4 modules.

I know it's an almost utterly insignificant point to bring up, but I remember Mika commented something about a minor  advantage to take dynamos over furnaces when you have exactly 4 modules: they increase your energy by smaller amounts more frequently, thus quite possibly allowing you to get off a shot slightly faster if it doesn't require a full 'charge burst' of energy.

That and I find it ironic that it's simultaneously less effective and more expensive to have three shiva furnaces than three dynamos and a shiva furnace.

*amused* Sorry, I tend to repeat things that have already been said. *chuckle*

And congratulations on your upcoming promotion to "Enlightened".
