Game received, and bug fixed (in CVS). It was unrelated to the "too much crew". Saving would go wrong if there were other ships in HyperSpace.

A totally unrelated to this thread crash I ran into (sorry, not much to go on for this one) just now:
In melee, I had it set to watch two of the AIs fight it out. One of them selected a Pkunk, and immediately it had a shot, so it took that and engaged its recharge once. The screen then zoomed onto the Pkunk and stuck for a few moments and then the game dropped out and crashed.
Don't know how easy this one is going to be to track down, but here you go.
