I've been playing UQM for a bit, I decided to come here. I saw there was a newer version out, so I started downloading. There was a big file that was called "voice". What does this mean? Do the aliens actually talk in the game? Or is it just text?

Umm.... about the part were you said that you've acually been playing it, and then actually asking if the aliens talk... did you even play the game for more than 1 minute...? or do you just not have speakers or headphones to listen to the game? are you sure you actually haven't played the game? Maybe he didn't download the voice packages last time he installed UQM, or installed it from a source (Linux distribution, CD, whatever) that didn't have the voice packages.
I've played the original 3d0 and pc version... they talk in both of those... later I got the newly released version from sourceforge to play it on my current computer... from then until now they have always talked...
This is just plain wrong, staar. The original PC release did not have speech and there is no way they could have squashed all that speech onto four floppies (short of writing a much better speech synthesiser than anything available at the time). AFAIK, the PC CD-ROM re-release didn't have speech either.
do you even know what you are talking about?
Three words: pot, kettle, black.

Yes, I played it for awhile. I canceled the voice file because it was too big. I think I'll redownload it then.

I downloaded the UQM .dmg file for my iMac and it works great. But when trying to download the speech files, my browser simply starts displaying the file as if it is a text file. I've tried right-clicking the link and selecting 'download target file' (or somesuch) but that just gets me the html file which starts the download process. Does anyone have any idea what I may be doing wrong? Many thanks in advance!

You should be able to save-as; alternatively, if you can catch it before the redirect, you should be able to right-click the link to the .uqm file itself.
