can i view the planet surface files in a viewer?

im looking at doing an art project and id like to be able to look at the planet surface images through a projector. is it possible to extract them out of the game and use a viewer to look at them individually? thank you.

Actually, no; the planet surfaces are all generated in the game.
Earth is an exception.

Perhaps rip out the generating code to an external program, so you get your "viewer"? just put in the correct seeds for the random number generator (you could find out somehow by putting it on the screen when you visit a planet in the game or by also ripping the starmap and all things which are used to "make" the seed)

that's half true, about earth i mean...

if you were to remove the slave shield and land on earth the texture where the lander lands turns black.

And if you modify the source code so that the surface of the Earth is a strawberry, then you see a surface of a strawberry in the game. *SHOCK*
