One team full of Ur-Quan Dreadnoughts, the other one full of Kohr-Ah Marauders. Set both to "Awesome CPU" Winner: The Kohr-Ah-Team.
Then again, the same teams, but now I set the Kzer-Za-Team to "Weak CPU", while Kohr-Ah stays "Awesome"... Guess who wins: The Ur-Quan-Dreadnought Team
Not surprising. A Weak AI can't use its secondary. Seeing as how launching fighters against a Marauder is a complete tactical failure (GOGO FLAMEWAVE), that can only be to the Kzer-Za's benefit.
Indeed, it seems that the AI difficulty only determines what tactics are used, as opposed to actually being smarter, such as boosting or knowing that the player is playing the AI for chumps.
It's pretty weird why the awesome AI uses the fighters against the marauder at all, while it does not use them against Earthcruisers and Chmmr Avatar. Orz Marines would be okay, if you do it correctly (energy should be down.... however: i think they have a chance of approx. 50% to get through the flamewave)
In this case the Kohr-Ah won, but I only tried one time.
It's rather boring: They steer themselves into a face-to-face position and then fire as long/as soon energy is available and even accelerate and therefore ramm each other...
Having a low AI value also makes the AI misestimate the location of its enemy. An Awesome AI aims at cloaked Ilwrath about as well as the bottom-ranked AI aims at ordinary ships.
Since the offset is a constant independent of range, that means the lower AI still makes a halfway decent sniper, but at close range it can sometimes be off by 45 degrees. Sort of weird.
