Erm, getting my ass kicked
« on: April 17, 2006, 12:33:55 pm »

So, I just started this game.. plot looks interesting, game looks fun etc.. until some ship attacks me on earth, which I'm assuming is supposed to be your first battle. I had already tried a few practice matches in Melee Simulator. Well, the ship killed me before I had managed to turn to face it. Which incidently, happens in about half the matches I play too.

Now, I'm starting suspect that this is the speed being fucked up, and not me being horribly bad. Your ship isn't supposed to be killed after less than 1 second of fire is it?

Yeah, the Vindicator is a...suboptimal combat vessel in the early game.

Not that the Cruisers are all that great either. You might want to check all of Sol's planets before leaving.

Unless you've got a quadruple gamespeed bug, you should definitely be able to kill that first Avenger with a Cruiser. Try and think of the melee in this game as more like Mortal Kombat, and less like something out of a Babylon 5 or Star Trek episode and you'll get used to the pace eventually.

I had the same problem...mine was using the ship correctly. Don't use the vindicator...and remember to let up on the forward thrust when you turn, and the 'enter' and 'fire' key fire your two weapons... I put that in for dopes like me that had no directions on how to work the derned ships.  The Earth cruiser steers like a cow but two shots on the Ilwrath should do it.
I like to practice manuvers with an Earth ship against an Ilwrath in normal cyborg in Super Melee.
If you are facing a probe then maybe one of the outer planets will provide the rescources you may need to help.

In my experience, you'll have to clock a lot time in Super Melee to make use of those 'resources' properly.  If you max your engines you can outrun anything in HyperSpace until you get the flagship in the kind of shape where it's a reasonable match for anything else.

I didn't need to practice in Super Melee.

I got all the practice in needed in Star Control 1!

When using the earth cruiser in the first battle.  First thing, turn and fly away from the enemy as soon as possible.  Once you have acheived a flight path away from him, let off the thrust.  Then, turn to face him (do not thrust toward him).  You will now be flying backwards and facing him.  Fire primary weapon, and he is done for in two hits.  Unless you are unlucky and start right next to him, you should have plenty of time to execute this very simple strategy for an easy defeat.  Grin
