What if you woke up, and the Ur-Quan sounded more like this...
« on: April 19, 2006, 05:57:24 am »

We've got a bit of down time at my studio here, so I decided to do up a couple of voices for some of the races. These are pretty much how I heard them in my head when I played the game way back when on the PC. Everybody over here digs the game, so I'm trying to see if I can rile up some support for some voice over packs. We'll see.

In the meantime, let me know what you think. Don't mind the mediocre performaces, I was focusing mostly on the correct timbre and sound quality.

Ur-Quan Kzer-Za

Ilwrath

Pkunk
http://letmeend.com/audio/votest/pkunktest.ogg

Yehat
http://letmeend.com/audio/votest/yehattest.ogg

Umgah
http://letmeend.com/audio/votest/umgahtest.ogg

I actually ended up doing 36 of the 47 Kzer-Za sound clips, so you might see an Ur-Quan pack in the very near future.

That Umgah is great and awesome... Ur-quan and Ilwrath are neat, but the Yehat and Pkunk ones are.. well... different...

Though they all have great enough soundquality to be able to make into the game, though! Great job!

The recording and sound quality on these recordings is quite good (although the Pkunk seems to have some breathing into the microphone), and the voice effects are great.

The Umgah is pretty much spot on (although the delivery needs a bit more zest, IMHO) and a noticeable improvement on the original. The Ur-Quan is a bit flat and mechanic (both in delivery and timbre), but works quite well.

The Ilwrath processing is interesting, but the voice acting sounds more like VUX to me. I think the 3DO Ilwrath is great, though, so you could try for something like that.

The "birdiness" on the Yehat and Pkunk is quite good, but the acting needs a bit of work, as you said.

I don't know, I found the Pkunk sound like an old lady that wanted to cross the road, and the Ur-Quan could be more... well... impressing. I totally like the Umgah though, although I would really need the subtitles with it to understand em well if they spoke like this.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't really choose the best Ur-Quan example, actually that particular one is meant to be a little flat as it is a recording.

I don't particularly care for the 3DO Ilwrath, I was attempting to go for something a bit more mischevious and pointed. I'll have to check the VUX out to see what you mean.

Are the Yehat and Pkunk timbres on? I realize the acting in those clips is teh suck, but does it at least fit the race sound wise? I.E. does it add to the suspension of disbelief which some of the current VOs detract from? It sounds like very few people are down with the Pkunk so far. What does it need more of? Less of? Keep in mind it's hard to make a person sound much like a bird, regardless of post processing techiniques

Thanks again for the constructive criticism.

I should really listen to those with the species' music on the background for the full effect. I think they'd work pretty well though.
For the Ilwrath I really liked the 3DO version, and while this one sounds pretty good, it will be hard to top the original.
The Pkunk has a certain Tweety-ness to it.

Ah, OK. That makes sense.

To me, your version sounds weak but arrogant and condescending (although the sound processing helps a bit), while the 3DO version which sounds diabolical and maniacal. The deeper/lower timbre of the 3DO version helps a lot.

I'd say the Pkunk and Yehat sound processing and timbre are OK.

Could you perhaps upload a sample of the Ur-Quan where they are more angered?

I think the Illwrath should be a little bit more like whispering or... even better... do you know Black Metal?

The Pkunk are very good.

The Yehat should speak a little bit slower in my opinion, while the Umgah should speak faster and make more pauses... The laughing should be more intense.

About the pkunk i think they sound kinda "mechanicalized" if that makes sense and they definetly need to sound more flamboyant. And like i said befor the umgah are awesome man, but they would sound dead on to me atleast if there was like a hint of foolishness in the deep voice.    .................oooh! and dude you should redo the talking pet guy voice , i dont know who did it in the o.5 v but its horrible , it sounds like he could be a character in waynes world. If you make his voice he should be like debonair and classy it would be halarious. and when he makes the other noises like woof! woof! they should be exactly a Dogs bark, since thats what he does is 'mimic speech'~

Very good work. I especially like the Ilwrath voice.
My only suggestions would be to make the Ur-Quan
voice a little higher and the Yehat voice a little deeper.

I have to admit, I've never listened to the in-game voices,
so I can't really compare these to anything else. (I usually
listen to music while gaming.)

Here's a clip of the Ur-Quan a bit more angry. Probably won't get any other clips done until about Sunday or Monday. I'll try and get a couple of the other actors in the studio to do a couple as well.
