Hullo, I was told I might have better luck at this forum, so I have a couple questions to pose:
There's a good chance of my hosting a Star Control 2 tournament at a convention in Rhode Island (Uricon) next year. Anyone here from the area that would be interested in attending?
Even aside from that particular tournament, does anyone think StarCon2 is even tournamenent worthy? Has there been other SC2 tournaments? If its been done before, and especially if their are standard tournament rules, I'd appreciate seeing them.

I think this is a fabulous idea, but no I don't know of any "official" tournament rules. Here's a few suggestions...
Each player gets X points, where X reduces for each tier of the competition till in the penultamite tier you don't even have enough to buy one of the larger ships. Then, at the last battle you need to do something to shake it up. I have a few possibilities:
- Open the flood gates. No limit on spending.
- Pre-build a team and both have to stick with it
- Tally up for each player the value of surviving ships at the end of each battle and in the last battle that becomes the limit for the other player. (But don't tell this little detail.) So if they've done extremely well in each battle up to this point they'll be staring down the barrel of a potentially difficut final battle. You may need to decide a lower limit, tho, incase someone never has any significant ships remaining.
- For the final battle whip out Pong.
Whatever you decide, it'll be great. I hope you get enough participants. (Too bad I'm no longer in the area or I'd show up for sure.

I think 240 is a bit much, since filling up my team rarely results in more than 130. And the matches shouldnt take too long either... I'd say 100, 130, or 160.
The working date is currently February 24th - 26th.
While this may change at some point (it won't be locked in till October), it is unlikely.

I would set the rule that there should be only one ship of one type in each team. Also you could agree on a maximum score/rating, if you like it.
Another thing I recently thought of is to give each player some kind of "credits" which are reduced by "buying" ships (cost credits as much as they cost).
The winner of a round would get the credits of his remaining ships back and/or some credits for defeating the enemy ships... Who has 0 credits will be defeated.... But I'm not sure if this is a good idea.

How about selecting the ship? user selectable or random?
And definetily only one ship of a kind per team.

Hmm, sounds interesting...
I think as long as the points are agreed upon ahead of time, there should be no problems.
The only rule I would suggest is that the first set of ships to fight should be random. That way the second player doesnt gain an unfair advantage by countering the first player's selection. After the first battle, the players can select any ship they want.

Let's stop faking and make this happen people!!! I think we can get Star Control 2 on X-box Live(tm) in no time! We need instant satisfaction! I’m hearing allot of talk about “tweaks” to the ships, and of course “The real Star Control 3”. I think that great games like SC really suffer from limited support! Sure there are mutants like us that love the hell out of these games, but don’t you think that if SC2 sold more than 10,000 copies we would already have the Toys for Bob SC3! The most likely tournament situation will be an online game. Gems for those who care: You can play a burned CD-Rom in your 3DO! That means you can actually edit the ISO in a Hex-Editor! (We did it) I am the proud owner of a VUX ship that will out thrust a SPATHI! “Talk about a smack down!” More gems coming soon…..
