I was thinking about ways to take the SC story into a remake of SC2. Perhaps after the destruction of the Sa Matra, two Urquan ships found an androsynth outpost near the galactic core. These androysynth were sent far away from Orz space to protect the time device. The time device is why the Orz destroyed the Andrsynth. The Urqan realizing the war has been lost think they can use the time device to turn back time. But alas they don't have the time key to activate the device.
With alliance ships searching and destroying every last Urqan and KorAh the ships decide to leave the galaxy and head for the andromeda galaxy. 75 years later they arrive at andromeda and meet the Clairconctlar.
The Clairconctlar summon their neighbors the Daktaklakpak to help the Urquan build a time key for the time device. The urquan then use the time device to turn back time by 85 years (or whatever, the start of the SC2 game) when you first arrived at sol with your precursor vessel and met Fiffo at pluto..Their goal is to inform the SaMatra Urquan of it's impending doom. Now some of the races like the airlou know the time shift happened. Perhaps the Melnorme know it as well..
Now basicly the same adventure could take place in a remake, perhaps this time with the andrsynth and possible a secret star gate leading to the andromeda galaxy so you can interact with the SC3 races..
Hey it worked in Star Trek and Terminator at least !.

If you really wanted to have Androsynth in the game, I think that's an intresting basis for a fan mod. If you wanted to add a more difficult play option for instance.
But I think your plot synopsis hinted at an intresting idea: Playing as renegade Ur-Quans post-Sa-Matra. Would that be something?

Yeah playing the bad guys might be fun for a change. Perhaps an option?
My whole thing is that I think the Urquan and Korah should be the major nemisis in a sequal. No other race has that "fear factor". The samatra has a "death star" appeal that can't really be equaled in the SC story line without seeming hacked imo. Also, how could a new precursor vessel be worked into the story since the old one is gone? Having a human made ship as the "workhorse" just doesn't have the flair of driving a rare alien vessle imo.
Now if somehow the clock was rewound and the Urquan were tipped off to the immenent destruction of the samatra, they'd probably do things differently and the options are unlimited. Some possibilities are:
The Urquan, knowing the earth base was helping out, could destroy the earth base and commander Hayes. This would force the player to use a different home base(s) to upgrade the ship.
The spathi battle thralls could be ordered by the Urquan masters to construct a black spathi squadron to hunt down the vindicator. They could even command other races to hunt you down as well.. You'd constantly have to watch your back!
The samatra could be moved to random star locations throught the game making you have to hunt it down.
The samatra could be upgraded with new defenses making the final showdown even more challenging.
All I know for sure is (almost) anything is better than the storyline of SC3..

I'm sure I had a good storyline in my opinion, which places the Orz as the head honcho antagonists and brings back a couple of races in SC3. Do a search for "star control 4". And eh.. that's about it.
By the way.. after this I've decided to scrap 70% of the Kessari Races. The ones to survive are the Daks, K'tang, Doog, maybe Ploxis, and maybe Owa. Tough call to make really but hey.
But personally I can't wait until TFB grace the series once more Probably better than anything I could write for SC

Daktaklakpak This is horrible, this idea. Let's not use Star Control 3 races. I'd prefer TFB pull new ones out of the usual place instead of stooping to that level. I WOULD like to see Fwiffo be put in the sequel and given his own voice actor, possibly his own custom ship. A "Play As Ur-Quan" mod would be cool (especially if it were much harder than the regular game), but wouldn't appeal to most people as the basis for a new sequel.

Star Control 3 is considered Non-Canon. And I hate the game. The animatronics (puppets) just look stupid, the interface isn't user-friendly, and you have to make colonies in that game.
As long as there's a nice variety of ships, deep storyline, with non-linear stories within that one, and exploring, and no colonies, or mining, I'll be happy. I wonder if it will be 3D or really enhanced 2D....
I have faith in TFB!

Just because Star Control 3 was horrible doesn't mean that TFB couldn't take some of the races therein and make them much better than they were.

No. However, call me crazy but I doubt races that were half thrown together to replace TFB's original story elements are not high on their "let's kao-tao to them" list.

You know, after watching the mirror universe off from Star Trek, it may be interesting to have a mirror universe of Star Control. An evil Zelnick who forged the Empire instead of the New Alliance of Free Stars. His methods were more horrific, including subjugation of many heirarchy and neutral races. Commander Hayes is just as equally fanatic to the Empire's cause and constantly interrogates information from captured prisoners, which are used to bolster the ships of the Empire. Could be interesting If you want you could have a mirror Zelnick cross over into our universe via Precursor artifact, and the true Zelnick in his Precursor MK2 going against a Terranified Precursor Battleship. Me thinks that the mirror versions could be called Terran, while normal ones would be called Earthling. Races like the Gg and Burvixese could have survived in the mirror universe as well. The main objective as Emperor Zelnick is to destroy the Sa-Matra, but probably with the enslaved force of all the subjugated races put together. I'm not so sure on this idea but I quite like it In the mirror universe to subjugate the Utwig, you have to steal the Ultron, as in the mirror universe they never dropped it, etc.

I think that any "Real" SC3 should take the viewpoint of a young Human Starship Captain out to prove himself to the new Alliance immediately after the Sa-Matra was destroyed. You start off with simple missions and trashy jobs, but uncover sinister plots as you prove yourself to be an able commander.
From there the story could branch out. The druuge could start a small war, or you could decide to head over to where the Action is, assisting the Chmmr in finishing off the combined fleets of the Ur-Quan and Kohr-Ah, whom have tactically retreated for now.
Or perhaps you could head off and begin freeing former Slave Races, making both friends and enemies along the way, or strike out into territory the Kohr-Ah have "Cleansed"... only to find that the cleansing wasnt as complete as it could have been and anger the local scavengers and scum swarming over the dead worlds the Kohr-Ah left behind.
The Goal of the game would be to "Make A Difference" before you have to mandatorily retire, and you should be able to take actions as freely as you like, the game scoring you accordingly. You could become the most infamous human captain in history and be labelled "Captain X The Conqueror" or be the most altruistic Starship Captain in the universe.
